Since the introduction of thge Semi Finals they have only ever missed the Grand Final on one occassion – that of 2010. Many of their artists in the National Finals are well known Europena artists and well known amongst Eurovision fans.

Surprise omissions from ther line up are Eurovision Winner and National Finalist in 2012 Charlotte Perilli, Danny Sausedo who was runner up for 2 years in a row at are extremely the National Final in 2011 and 2012, Boyband Young Blood who were in last year’s MF (Melodi Festivalen) who are extremely popular and finally MF favourite Sana Nielson. However there are some new editions to MF and the welcome return of firm favourites.

Semi Final 1 Analysis

A welcome return this year for David Lindgren who shall be performing “Skyline”. David came 3rd last year in the Swedish National Final with the wonderful song “Shout It Out” which in the contest could have won any  other year but so strong was the competition last year. David has continued his success last year across Scandanavia and could be a strong contender in Semi Final 1.

Another namer to watch out for in Semi Final 1 is the act Cookies and Beans as their composer is the legendary Freferik Kempe who has entered Melodifestivalen no more than 23 times, twice as a singer/artist and then a further 21 times as composer. he has no fewer than 3 songs in this years Semi Finals and if his past record is to demonstrate his ability to write a winning song – well he has written 3 MF winners – Hero in 2008, La Voix in 2009 and Popular in 2011 (which came third at Eurovission)

Semi Final 2 Analysis

Semi Final 2 brings us the second song written by Frederik Kempe but also the return of 2 well known MF contestants – Sean Banan and a MF Super group of Female Soloists – Pernilla Wahlgren, Hanna Hedlund & Jenny Silver (Now that could be very interesting)

Sean Banan was in MF last year with his highly catchy song. He is a Swedish comedian and siner who at the age of 2 left his home country of Iran with his parents and resides in Gothenberg. You know that Sean will certainly pit on a show if his perfomance in 2012 is anything to go by

Now what can we say about Pernilla Wahlgren. She is not only a singer but an actress and tv presenter. She broke through onto the music scene by competing in the 1985 MF contest with the song Picadilly Circus which came fourth but was very popular with the piublic – and so began her love affair with MF and Eurovision. She returned to MF in 1991 with the song Tvillingsjäl which was in fact written by Lena Phillipson who herself went on to represent Sweden with the Song “It Hurts” which took Sweden to the Top 10 in the Eurovision Finals. In 1991 Pernilla lost out to Carola who went on to actually win the Eurovision song contest later that year in Rome with “Captured by a Love Storm”.

Pernilla continued her career but resurfaced again at MF in 2003 in a duet with Jan Johanson (who represented Sweden in 1995 in Dublin coming 3rd that year). Pernilla and Jan’s song was called “Let Your Spirit Fly” and it came second in MF. Not to be disheartened Pernilla returned again in 2010 and through the Second Chance Semi Finals made it to the final again of MF with the fan favourite ” Jag Vill Om Du Vågar”. So this year she will return to MF with Jenny Silver and Hanna Hedlund – who are both npo strangers to MF. Can Pernilla make it to Eurovision? Time will tell. Let’s just look at her 2010 entry and hope for another great performance from her

Semi Final 3 Analysis

Again we will find a Frederik Kempe song here – “Heartstrings” so this is one to watch out for. However the act that most people will remember and with fondness will be Caroline af Ugglas. Caroline born in 1972 is an accomplished Singer, Actor and Chorister. Af Ugglas created the format for a televised choir contest, which was picked up by NBC in the United States as the show “Clash of the Choirs”, and by the Seven Network in Australia as “Battle of the Choirs”. She first entered MF in 2007 with the song “Tror på dig” which unfortunately did not proghress from the Semi Finals but never to be kept down she resurfaced in 2009 with the wonderful Swedish Song ‘Snälla Snälla’ (Please Please).

That final was one of the closest in MF history where it came down to the public vote to decide the winner. It was revealed that Caroline came second in the public vote by only 3207 televotes – American Presedential elections have heen lost by that size of votes!! Caroline narrowly lost out to “La Voix” but what was very interesting that year was that MF caused some debate across Sweden where a lot of the public wanted to send a song sung in Swedish to Eurovision and something which they felt was more traditional. The local media turned the contest into a massive rivalry between Caroline and Malena. If Caroline can recreate the magic of ‘Snälla Snälla’ then this could be an interesting contest.

Semi Final 4 Analysis

And here we come to it. The moment I thopught I would never say but in MF this year we have the trail blazing Swedish band Army Of Lovers – who had us all wanting to be “Crucified” back in 1991. I for one can remember dancing to this song in the college bar until the early hours of the morning. They have a typical Swedish Schlarger sounding style of music with the flair for the dramatics with their videos and stage performances. The band have gone through many line up changes to rival that of Destiny’s Child and The Sugar Babes but I am very happy to confirm that they will be performing in MF in 2013 with the original lineup especially for the occassion – Alexander Bard, Jean-Pierre Barda and Camilla Henemark. As mentioned “Crucified” was one of the biggest selling singles in Europe in 1991 and stayed at #1 in the European Singles Charts for 8 consecutive weeks and totalled 7 million album sales worldwide. Highly successful in Eastern Europe still today where they have played in Moscow’s Red Square several times they could be the act to keep an eye on at MF this year. F|or one thing you know that it will be high energy camp music and the crowd will go wild for them.

One final act to watch out for in this semi final is the 2011 Swedish Idol runner up Robin Stjernberg. He was a member of the Swedish Boy Bank “What’s Up” that also featured fellow MF and Eurovision success Eric Sadde. Robin released an album this year in Sweden called “My Versions” which went straight to #1 and was a massive success in Sweden so I am sure he will have plenty of supporters.

So that is it – All of the 32 acts have been announced and some surprises, some missing artists and some very welcomed renited and returning artists. I know we have heard none of the songs yet but who do you think might be a good representative for Sweden based on their past performances? Let us know.

  1. I don’t write a comment, but I looked at through some responses here Sweden Get Crucified For Their Selection! eurovisionireland. I actually do have 2 questions for you if it’s okay.
Is it simply me or do a few of these remarks come across as if they are written by brain dead individuals?
