10 am CET – BIG 7 Second Rehearsal

Just Refresh the page as usual.

ITALY

Andrew: Well this is looking and sounding better than it did on Sunday. Nothing wrong with it at all, the backdrop is the same and the vocals near perfect. Il Volo are interacting well with themselves and ultimately the cameras.

Elaine:

Lovely sounds coming from the Il Volo trio this morning. This is a big package of delicious gorgeousness and will seriously impress on Saturday. It would be a great show opener if it took a 1st half draw. Does it have enough universal appeal to win? Who knows?

Italy have drawn 2nd half in the Final at their Press Conference.

AUSTRIA

Andrew: This is a perfectly nice and safe tune that’s perfect for radio. The Make Makes are just a real band who are churning out this MOR song and giving the host country a respectable song to support. Its well sung and the piano  has no flames later in the song, like I say its safe and will probably not be in the top 10.

Elaine:

The Austrian song is what it is. It is a pleasant sing a long song – perfect for Sunday afternoon radio with a cup of tea and a chocolate hobnob. It is also a bit of an ear worm. It sums the song up when the whole way through you are just waiting for them to set the piano on fire!

Austria have already drawn out position 14 in the Final previously.

SPAIN

Elaine:

Edurne is still using the “Madonna Cape” trick however the dress underneath is a new, golder and shinier one. She is a stunningly beautiful girl but there are far too many theatrics going on for what I feel should be a simply staged gorgeous ballad. The camera needs to pan away when the backing dancer runs off stage because at present it just looks like a mistake.

Andrew: Well nobody is laughing at the Spanish rehearsal today either because we are used to it or its a lot better. I consider it to be the latter. It is certainly less messy, has a costume change and a hot male dancer. Edurne looks stunning in her gold dress and her vocals are on point. I think this was a good rehearsal but overall I do not see Spain in the top 10.

Spain have drawn 2nd half in the Final.

GERMANY

Andrew: Ann Sophie has got this song cracked that’s for sure. Nothing really changed since the first rehearsal and she is singing her quirky song well, its also well staged and although I would hope it may be on the left side of the scoreboard it will depend on the running order.

Elaine:

Ann Sophie and Black smoke is a massively underrated song in my opinion. She is cool as a cucumber and an awesome performer. Loving this – it is good on screen too. Could be one of the highest placed of the ‘big 7’

Germany have drawn the 2nd half in the Final.

UNITED KINGDOM

Andrew: Ok lets work on the positives. This run through is much better than sundays. The camera work is slicker and works better. It has a bit more of an impact and Bianca now wears a white fluff cape to hide the battery pack on her back. The negatives. Bianca comes across as very wooden, she has no groove to her style whereas by contrast Alex is trying so much harder to give a performance. This will get lost on Saturday night I fear and will not trouble even getting out of the bottom 5.

Elaine:

Ok so The U.K. have had their second rehearsal and it has improved massively from the first rehearsal which is to be expected. From the scat section onwards it looks pretty damn good to be honest. Bianca’s dress is working fully and looks good. The overhead shot in the middle is fabulous but the beginning still looks a bit problematic. They don’t look comfortable coming down the stairs!!!! In my opinion they cut to the backing dancers too often which can be a bit distracting. I think Alex and Bianca just need to go out, have fun, be confident and enjoy the experience. What will be will be!!

United Kingdom have drawn 1st half in the Final.

FRANCE

Elaine: France is just WOW – there is nothing really more that needs to be said – stunning

Andrew: One word describes the French performance. Magnifique! It is just faultless and stunning. Done to perfection and generating lots of reaction and emotion.

France have drawn 1st half in the Final.

AUSTRALIA

Guy is giving the performance a lot more oomph today. He still wearing the daft hat but we love a daft hat here in the Eurovision bubble. The performance is slick, his vocal is impressive and he will definitely pull out a great live performance on the night. Australia are bound to pick up many votes throughout Saturday evening due to the novelty of them being in the contest this year for the 60th Anniversary. I don’t see this as a winner at all but I think it will be up there in the Top 5-Top 10 bracket.

Australia have drawn 1st half in the Final.

3pm CET – First Dress Rehearsal for Semi Final 2

Just refresh the page as usual

LITHUANIA

Elaine:

Great opener from Lithuania – it’s fun, it’s colourful and upbeat – we need this in the final!

Andrew:

Very jolly and colourful performance from Lithuania. Lots of chemistry and interaction  between the two of them. A good opening to the Semi Final.  Vocally sounds fine too.

IRELAND

Andrew:

Lovely backdrop with the forest scene. Molly is already interacting with the camera. After a gentle start vocally it really does pick up strength. A good solid performance from Molly for Ireland.

Elaine:

Ah yes go on Molly – she is looking down the camera now – not all the time but just enough to make it look natural and genuine. Gorgeous little ballad from Ireland – it’s biggest obstacle may be the 2nd place in the running order.

SAN MARINO

Elaine:

Oh dear goodness San Marino was an assault on my ears. I know it seems harsh to be so critical of two youngsters but really the performance was not good. Anita was very off key in many parts. I do not see how this can qualify.

Andrew:

Anita has some off key vocals today but it wouldn’t really matter as this is so cheesy and sugary that it is quite dreadful. It is a shame as both have proved they are better singers before.  Could finish bottom.

MONTENEGRO

Andrew:

Now this is better a lovely classy Balkan ballad which ticks all the right boxes, moody stylish and hitting all the right spots. Vocally near perfect and this is a contender for the final.

Elaine:

Knez is a great vocalist. The Montenegrin presentation looks fabulous and sounds fabulous. They do not have many voting neighbours but they qualified last year due to the quality of their song and should do so again this year.

MALTA

Andrew:

Amber looks good in her black dress. The vocals are sounding a bit off key. She is managing to hit the high notes but still a bit screechy. This will not help Malta to pick up the votes.  I love the backdrop lots of fire and wings, looks great.

Elaine:

Amber sounds off key today during the verses. Her power on the chorus is great and she really gives everything of herself. She will need to tighten up that vocal performance for the jury final tonight.

NORWAY

Elaine:

Norway is a cracker. Sinister and mysterious with a brilliant vocal from Mørland and Debrah. Norway is a little dark horse in this competition.

Andrew:

Norway is coming across really well now. Dark and moody with great chemistry and camaera work. Vocally fab too. Another serious contender.

PORTUGAL

Andrew:

Lots of attitude now coming across in this song.  Great dress and backdrop. I had this in last place and now I am not so sure this could do a bit better but still not enough to qualify. But it is inoffensive.

Elaine:

Leonor gave a great performance this afternoon. The song sounded the best I have heard it since I arrived here. It just is not memorable enough. As soon as the song finishes I am unable to recall how it goes. There needed to be far more of a hook to give it a qualification chance.

CZECH REPUBLIC

Andrew:

Marta and Vaclav give a really superb performance here.  It’s a great rock style ballad and the chemistry is good too. The Czech deserve a shot in the Final and this could give them that chance.

Elaine:

Marta and Václav were great. The song is powerfully sung and there is a great connection between them. The Czech Republic have a very poor qualification record however so it could be a complete lottery as to whether we will see them on Saturday.

ISRAEL

Elaine:

Israel HAVE to be in the final. What a fabulous uptempo piece of camp nonsense. Nadav is just having fun on the stage and this would be a great show opener for the final if it received a 1st half draw.

Andrew:

Nadav  is giving his all in this now, loving the reaction from the crowd. Great dance moves and good vocals and fresh and young and modern. Plus we need more of this in the Final.

LATVIA

Andrew:

Wow Latvia have really upped the game now. The crowd are going mental for this during and after the song.  Visually and vocally stunning.  This is more than a small dark horse now.

Elaine:

WOW Animata just killed it on the stage. What a reception she seemed to get in the arena too. The final would be a poorer place without ‘Love Injected’ in it.

AZERBAIJAN

Andrew:

Not a lot wrong with this either. Good vocals and the dancers still writhing around like wolves. Backdrop gives this a certain moodiness.  Yep it’s a certain shoe in to the Final.

Elaine:

Azerbaijan is my favourite song in the whole contest. Elnur is brilliant and the ballad is as haunting as you will hear anywhere. I personally LOVE the dancers and think they add to the wildness of the performance. Surely a finalist

ICELAND

Elaine:

Oh oh oh oh Iceland!! The vocal was terrible. We have to hope she is saving it for the jury final. The song is ‘Unbroken’ unlike her voice in this performance.

Andrew:

Oh dear terrible vocals from Maria today, its ear splitting at times. Not even Hera Bjork on backing vocals is saving this. She has to improve big time tonight and tomorrow to stand any chance.

SWEDEN

Andrew: Sweden just need to turn up really. Mans is the consummate pro and has a great song with a good gimmick with the man in the backdrop. The crowd seem to love this one too. An easy qualifier.

Elaine:

Måns was just a fraction out of position for some of the graphic shots during this performance. The butterfly wings were not quite central. My favourite part of this whole show is the little fist pump with Billy Bunter but it was also just a fraction off. This will not affect its qualification chances in the slightest and it will fly into the final and probably win the semi.

SWITZERLAND

Elaine:

Mélanie has the best dress of the contest by a country mile. It is used fabulously to contrast between the verse and chorus. I love the set for this and I think it could be a qualifier.

Andrew: This one is ok you know. Another moody feeling and great backdrop. A good feel with the backing drums. A good performance vocally too from Melanie.

CYPRUS

Andrew:

Simply staged and beautiful. Nothing more to say. Vocally perfect and a stronger challenger now.

Elaine:

Aww Cyprus is just delightful. John gives a simple and charming performance. He knows how to work the cameras and gives some great shots down the lens. The longer period in black and white at the beginning definitely enhances this. Qualifying surely.

SLOVENIA

Andrew:

Love the quirky vocals. Its got plenty going for it. Still find the air violin offputting.  It may be good enough to get through though.

Elaine:

Slovenia is a fab uptempo song. It is addictive and gets into your head and stays there for a while. Really want Slovenia in the final. Let’s hope it gets some votes.

POLAND

Andrew: I am finding this just a little bit dull and dreary after what has gone before. Some of the vocals are a bit off key as well. I fear this may not be qualifying.

Elaine:

I wish I could find something nice to say about Poland but it makes me nauseous. I know it is a beautiful ballad but add all the pink petals and it really become vomit inducing. All that saying she is a great vocalist.

9pm CET – JURY VOTING Dress Rehearsal for Semi Final 2

This in the all important JURY Voting Dress Rehearsal for Semi Final 2

JUST REFRESH THE PAGE for our comments

LITHUANIA

Elaine:

Loved it!!! Need it!! Want It!!!! Mon the Lithuanians 🙂 I say QUALIFIER – and then immediately after look who appeared in the green room when she should be in the press centre.

Monika from Lithuania immediately after Jury Final performance

Monika from Lithuania immediately after Jury Final performance

Andrew:

Still a good opener. Little change from earlier today could well qualify.

IRELAND

Elaine:

Gorgeous and beautiful. I have heard her sing it better but there was nothing wrong with it. I think it’s gonna be borderline for qualification. If pushed I say NON QUALIFER – sadly

Andrew:

She is interacting well with the camera. I decent performance, vocals not quite as strong, borderline qualifier.

SAN MARINO

Andrew:

Still pretty ropey. Sorry SM but going nowhere fast. Ditch Seigel and find inspiration elsewhere. No chance.

Elaine:

You can illuminate as many candles as you want but it won’t stop your participation being extinguished!!! I think Michele has come out in sympathy with Anita’s poor vocal from this afternoon. I say NON QUALIFIER

MONTENEGRO

Elaine:

Knez is such a pro – great singer, great performance – I say QUALIFIER

Andrew:

Still classy and safe for the genre. I sure fire qualifier.

MALTA

Elaine:

A better vocal performance tonight but I am not convinced she has done enough. She was still a bit shaky on some notes during the verse – I say NON QUALIFIER (but the Irish fans out there might want to throw some votes her way – she was sporting the YES badge in support of Friday’s marriage referendum xxx)

Andrew:

The vocals are marginally better than this afternoon but still struggling a little. I feel Malta may struggle to qualify.

NORWAY

Andrew:

Norway fantastic. I possible winner of the Semi Final.

Elaine:

Sheer class from Norway – I say QUALIFIER

PORTUGAL

Elaine:

A good performance of a poor song – poor Leonor- I say NON QUALIFIER

Andrew:

No change from today better than expected but still no qualifier.

CZECH REPUBLIC

Elaine:

I really love this song. Great performance by both of them but with no qualification history to speak of I say – NON QUALIFIER

Andrew:

Seems slightly less meaty than today. Still not much wrong here and a possible qualifier.

ISRAEL

Andrew:

We now have pyro. Loving this now. A great reaction. Sure to qualify now.

Elaine:

Israel have pyros!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Awesome job Nadav – I say QUALIFIER

LATVIA

Elaine:

Animata is pure class – I think this MUST be in the final – I say QUALIFIER

Andrew:

No change from today, great and a sure fire qualifier.

AZERBAIJAN

Elaine:

The fabulous Elnur – great performance – I say QUALIFIER

Andrew:

Again no changes from today a good vocal performance and another qualifier for me.

ICELAND

Andrew:

A lot better vocal this evening, until half way though then it all goes bad again, I thought Iceland were gonna pull themselves out of the fire but now I have them as a non Qualifier.

Elaine:

Iceland was marginally better than this afternoon but still far too many duff notes on show and the dogs of Vienna were surely howling along – I say NON QUALIFIER

SWEDEN

Elaine:

Måns was slightly off again but won’t affect his chances whatsoever and will be vying with Norway to win this semi – I say QUALIFIER

Andrew:

Nothing much to say, it’s a sure qualifier, some of the graphic alignment was slightly off.

SWITZERLAND

Elaine:

Switzerland is the surprise package for me. Really upped their game and it looks great. I say QUALIFIER

Andrew:

Good vocal again this evening. This has moved from non qualifier to marginal.

CYPRUS

Andrew: Visually great but at the start the vocal was a bit nervous. Not the best I have seen from John but I still think this will qualify.

Elaine:

Aww I love John. I love his vulnerability. I say QUALIFIER

SLOVENIA

Elaine:

Slovenia is brill. They were one of my favourite songs from when they first revealed it and I still love it. I say QUALIFIER

Andrew:

No changes from this afternoon, still quirky enough to qualify.

POLAND

Elaine:

Oh I am sorry but this is a snooze fest. Less is more less is more. I say NON QUALIFIER

Andrew:

Marginally better vocally tonight but still dull and do not see this qualifying

OUR PREDICTIONS

Elaine:

Controversially I think I preferred semi final 1 but here are my 10 predicted qualifiers after tonight’s performances

Lithuania

Montenegro

Norway

Israel

Latvia

Azerbaijan

Sweden

Switzerland

Cyprus

Slovenia

Andrew:

Ok here are mine too, there was more poor songs than Semi Final 1.

Slovenia

Cyprus

Sweden

Azerbaijan

Latvia

Israel

Norway

Montenegro

Czech republic

Switzerland

  1. Hi guys, all the websites have said that ireland is beautiful, is it missing the wow factor for it to qualify? Is there no hope.
Be great blog again this year. Thanks so much

  2. You both have Montenegro in and Ireland out, but Montengro have virtually nobody to vote for them bar Slovenia whereas Ireland have a load of potential voting allies

  3. I don’t think Switzerland was good enough but it’ll probably do an Albania. I’d say it’ll be one or the other of Czech Rep. & Lithuania, against each other. Molly’s performance was very disappointing. No connection at all imo. She looked pained and lost in her own world. I’ll be happy but very surprised if she makes it. Such a pity. 😦

  4. So no predictions for Ireland to qualify, that is a shame. RTE need to seriously up their game or people will lose interest all together.
