Beissoul & Gabrielė Griciūtė – Beautiful Life (Raigardas Tautkus, Raimondas J.Nabus, Beissoul, Gabrielė Griciūtė)
Review – A bluesy song “Beautiful Life” should be just that Beautiful. But what you have is a duet that both look young, cool and very contemporary. Looks wise it is Lisa Stansfield meeting a young Morten Harket. It should work but it doesn’t.
Why is that? Because their voices are individually excellent but just don’t work well together. It is a shame as the song is good but the sound is just all wrong. A shame
Monika – Baby Boy (Dmitrij Šavrov)
Review – Firstly 12 points for the poor person who has had to blow up all the giant balloons that are on the stage with Monika. I could not help but think that this is not a “Steps” song from the 1990’s and unfortunately a B-Side with that. It is a bubble gum pop song that has no highs or lows and just sounds to be all one repetitive note. I know that Monika is very popular in Lithuania but I think that it would struggle to make it to the final in Malmo – despite Bosnia Herzegovina and Turkey withdrawing today
Sophie – Make It Happen (Eglė Sabaliauskaitė, Einius Jarutis)
Review – Looking like Elizabeth Taylor from the movie “Cleopatra” I am not sure what this song is trying to be. It is a love song but sung with some anger and her hand on her hip for most of the song makes it look as if she is not really interested in being in the contest. There is a musical interlude in the middle of the song where Sophie does not actually sing and just stands there. It all looks very awkward. This is proving to be a weaker semi-final compared to last weeks.
Linas Adomaitis – I W 2night (Linas Adomaitis, Bjorn Hansen)
Review – This song thinks it is a mix between a Justin Timberlake song and a cheese platter. A middle aged man in shades pretending to drive a car with 3 girls that looks like they have just been plucked out of the audience. This is a car crash but it is fine – AS A BREAK DANCING POLICE MAN comes on the stage along with a man with a baseball bat!! I just don’t understand how this made it to the semi-final and I further do not understand how this got a huge reaction from the audience.
It would be a very short stay for Linas if he was to win the competition and represent Lithuania at Eurovision 2013
2/10 – and they are for the dancing police man.
Girmantė Vaitkutė – Time to Shine (Vytautas Bikus,.Girmantė Vaitkutė)
Review – This automatically gets a chance of qualifying as it comes after Linas. It is a melodic mid tempo love song. Girmante has a great voice and is expressive on camera. The song though sounds like a mash of 2 Adele Songs which might draw comparisons to her at Eurovision. But so far in this semi-final it is the best song by a country mile. The Jury will love this is Lithuania and I would say at Eurovision.
Gintarė Korsakaitė – Dreaming (Raigardas Tautkus, Jokūbas Daubaris, Gabrielė Griciūtė, Raimondas J.Nabus)
Review – An easy going summer lounging song. Easy on the ears and with a simple performance with no dramatics. It just doesn’t have a strong enough chorus that lifts the song to that next level. The bass could do with being made louder along with the drum beats and this could have some more impact. Inoffensive but would be overshadowed at Eurovision in a stadium.
El Fuego – Ledo Gabalėlis Laura Remeikienė)
Review – Meet Lithuania’s answer to Il Divo. They are a classically trained pop quartet. I would have to question why the vocal arrangement goes from whispering to complete baritone. We all know these 4 men can sing so they do not need to OVER prove it to us. They have some rather dated choreography where you cannot help but think of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody video. The song is not instantly memorable and when they go into the huge climax of the song be prepared to wake up. These are 4 handsome and talented young men who will be the House Wives choice in Lithuania. However we all know that classical/pop music is not that successful at Eurovision. PS – Fab Suits
Giedrė Smolskaitė – Stay Awake Tonight (Raigardas Tautkus, Gabrielė Griciūtė)
Review – “Stay Awake Tonight” – is that requests from the Lithuanian Broadcaster as you really need a coffee to keep you awake for this semi-final. In saying that this is actually a cool song – is “cool” ok to use these days? Giedre is a sultry woman and knows how to work the stage and camera. A strong RnB song that she performs very well indeed. I like this one and the best so far
Dar – Jump (Arvydas Martinėnas, Gorgi)
Review – Save the best for last as they say. This sounds like a great Alcazar song sung by a 2 piece Lithuanian Abba. They have it all – looks, voices, choreography and stage presence. A clever chorus that is very catchy and easy to remember with a great little dance movement that all people can do at home looking at the show, in a club or hopefully in the stadium in Malmo. A simple pop song – that is so hard to write – and performed excellently. My favourite tonight
So my Top 4 to qualify for the final are
1 – Dar – Jump
2 – Giedrė Smolskaitė – Stay Awake Tonight
3 – Girmantė Vaitkutė – Time to Shine
4 – Gintarė Korsakaitė – Dreaming
