Well! We’re two thirds of the way there now and it’s been a real roller-coaster. Last Saturday night, Mikael Saari, Cristal Snow, Annica Milan & Kimmo Blom joined Saara Alto, Stella-Christine and Eini in the grand final of Finland’s UMK Eurovision qualifier.
Next Saturday, 20th of February sees the last six contestants duke it out for the final three places. Let’s take a look and see if we can forecast who will go through. (Just as an aside, I have called 4/6 winners so far. Paddy Power ought to give me a job!)
Lieminen – Pehmeiden Arvojen Vaalijat (Guardian of the soft values)
Disco beats, people with lampshades on their heads, electronically-enhanced backing vocals…it’s all a bit Daft Punk (or simply daft?). However, it’s got a wonderful groovy dance beat and Lieminen’s voice transports you to the dancefloor of your favourite nightclub. I can’t stop my toe tapping to this song so for that reason, I’ll be placing it in the top three.
Tuuli Okkonen – Don’t Wake Me Up
An emotional song with a big chorus and a big voice to carry it. Tuuli could be a strong contender for Stockholm. The video is a bit freaky. Ice-sculptures and Gollum-like creatures, then it all comes over a bit ‘Frozen’ in the end. Will the voters send her through to the final or will they just ‘Let It Go’? Tune in on Saturday and find out. However we LOVE it and put her through to the Grand Final
Gusani Brothers – Poom Poom
A song with ‘summer club hit’ stamped all over it. A compulsive dance beat and a chorus that’s guaranteed to lodge in your brain whether you like it or not. Historically, Eurovision voters seem to like songs with nonsensical names (Boom bang-a-bang, Diggi-loo Diggi-lay) so ‘Poom Poom’ might have what it takes to qualify.
Barbe-Q-Barbies – Let Me Out
This song grabbed my attention right from the start and held on for the duration. That said, I have to admit to being a little biased as I’m a rock chick at heart. ‘Let Me Out’ is a kick-ass rock tune with balls, despite the fact it’s performed by an all-female rock band. Finland are well-known for fielding Eurovision contenders with a rock edge so I’m going to stick my neck out and say this one’s my favourite for next Saturday night.
PIETARIN SPEKTAAKKELI: Liian kuuma
This rockabilly number stands out from the other entries as the only song of this genre competing for a place at Stockholm. While it’s a pleasant enough tune, I think it lacks Eurovision potential. I can see ‘Too Hot’ getting a lukewarm reception from the voters.
Sandhja – Sing It Away
I found myself being reminded of Eurovision 2012 winner Loreen’s ‘Euphoria’ while listening to this song. It’s got that compelling dance beat that crashes into a feel-good chorus but doesn’t quite generate enough Euphoria for me to place it in the top three.
How do they rate?
Here’s my predictions for next Saturday’s UMK16 third heat qualifier:
- Barbe-Q-Barbies – Let Me Out
- Tuuli Okkonen – Don’t Wake Me Up
- Lieminen – Pehmeiden Arvojen Vaalijat
- Sandhja – Sing It Away
- Gusani Brothers – Poom Poom
- PIETARIN SPEKTAAKKELI: “Liian kuuma”
So who do you think will qualify from Heat 3 of UMK2016? Do you agree with my thoughts? Is there a Eurovision winner there?
