GEORGIA: The King and Queen of Georgia discuss what’s hot and what’s not in the Georgian song selection for Eurovision 2016.
No we are not talking about Nodi and Sophie, we are of course talking about myself and the honourable David Elder who are Georgian royalty when it comes to Eurovision. Just ask the delegation leaders – and see the pictures of the coronation yourself. (I will leave it up to the readers to decide who is the king and who is the queen)
Georgia will be represented in Stockholm by Nika Kocharov and the Young Georgian Lolitaz who were selected internally and the 5 shortlisted songs were aired on 03/02/16. The public have a window from the 4th February – 15th February to cast their televote and the winning song will be announced on 15th February after the televote is combined with the votes of an international jury.
But never mind all that just now – let’s get down to the opinions that really count………….. thank goodness we are also the King and Queen of alternative rock music ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
First up we have ‘Midnight Gold’
Elaine: Well on first listen it reminded me of Gary Newman’s ‘Cars’ I like this until the tempo change where it all becomes a bit too rocky and “out there” for me. I like a bit more melody to my songs – I cannot see me cutting any shapes to this in May 😦
David: Seems to be the one that’s expected to go through. This would be my second choice and is VERY Oasis sounding!
Next up – ‘Pain in my Heart’
Elaine: Ooh I like this – who knew I was such a Indie fan at heart? I am sure many Eurovision fans may find this a “pain in the a**e” but it works for me – thumbs up!
David: Actually, I can think of other places this one is likely to give you pain first, and your heart isn’t one of them!
3rd up is ‘Right of Wrong’
Elaine: If you like some synthesizer and electro beats to your music then this is one for you. I like the catchy “always right or wrong” chorus but the rest of it leaves me a bit bored if truth be told. ‘Right of Wrong’? I’m afraid its just WRONG
David: Is that really the title? Surely some mistake? Anyway, it is neither right or wrong. It’s just a bit…meh.
On to the next choice – ‘Sugar and Milk’
Elaine: Oh I really hoped I could get through all 5 songs without using the phrase – “it’s just a lot of noise” but unfortunately I’ve fallen and the 2nd last hurdle – oh well I have done not too bad – sorry!!!!!!!!!
David: Grungey and electric. This is one of the better ones.
and finally ……….. ‘Weagree’
Elaine: I love the laid back feel to this song. I know the schlager fans and dance floor divas will be up in arms at the thought of this winning but it is my favourite – just sit back, relax and chill!!! I hope that Georgia send this to Stockholm because I cannot wait to hear the attempt at the remix for the Euroclub 🙂
David: Again, is this really one word? No matter, cos this is the best song here by a long way. The only one that is both grungey and mellow, and therefore quite listenable. Whether it would garner enough votes to take it through to the final, however, is another question.
So there you have it folks – The royalty have spoken – we differ in opinion on most of the songs but ironically ‘Weagree’ on the song that we think Georgia should send to Stockholm. In the words of Mr Elder “I think anyone who is a fan of mid-90’s Oasis is going to LOVE this set of songs”
If you are a fan of schlager and all things dancetastic then perhaps this selection is best avoided however it wont be the first time Georgia have gone against the grain and picked something that will stand out on it’s own against the rest of Europe’s entries. The risk did not pay off with The Shin and Mariko but will they have better luck this year? Let us know what you think!
We are off to get the butler to dry clean the frocks and dust off the tiaras so we are looking our best for February 15th – choose well Georgia xxx
