It is with a heavy heart that we bring you the news of the passing of Peret (Pere Pubill Calaf). He will be known to many as being the Spanish representative at Eurovision 1974 in Brighton. He passed away in Barcelona yesterday following a recent diagnosis of cancer.

Peret’s song from Eurovision 1974 is personally one of my favourites from Spain over the history of the contest. A talented man not only was he a singer but also a guitarist, composer and producer and even a Pastor.

In Spain he was referred to as the ‘King of Rumba’ and one of the forefathers of what is known as ‘Catalan rumba’. One could describe this music as a fusion between flamenco rumba, mambo and even rock n’ roll.

At Eurovision in 1974 he performed the song ‘Canta y sé feliz/Sing and be happy’ and truly that song always has that effect on me everytime I hear it. He placed 9th in the Grand Final.

He was also famed for countless albums but one of his first and most beloved songs was the 1971 classic ‘Borriquito’ – you will enjoy this song.

Our thoughts are with Peret’s family at this time.

R.I.P.
