Following the wonderful return to the Top 10 at Eurovision 2012, we all thought that the Spanish Broadcaster TVE would have seen the immense support and growth for the Spanish Eurovision Market. However we at Eurovision Ireland have been contacted by hundreds of Spanish Eurovision fans asking us to highlight the stance that TVE is taking in 2013 on their broadcasting of the Semi Finals of Eurovision from Malmo this year.

This appears to be a regular trait that TVE has with the broadcasting of the Eurovision Semi Finals. Under the EBU regulations, TVE must broadcast the semi final in which Spanish viewers are voting in live on TVE. As for the other semi final there are no guidelines and from year to year the national broadcaster has made the decision to sometimes not broadcast their non voting semi final on television but place it on their website.

Broadcasting a live show on website has the potential for internet connections to go down or to be slow and congested and let’s face it – you want to look at the Eurovision on your big plasma tv screen with all your friends over to your house/cassa – thus according to the Spanish Eurovision fans “depriving them of the 3 Eurovision Gala shows”. It is no secret that all of the other entrants in the Eurovision Song Contest broadcast all 3 shows on their national channels. Even Bosnia Herzegovina this year – despite not being at the contest in Malmo – has confirmed that they will be broadcasting all 3 shows on their National Channel. So what is the issue with Spain – considering that they are one of the Big 5 – they are contributing the most funds for the contest – so why do they not consistently broadcast the 3 live shows?

TVE has said on several occasions that they have conflicting broadcasting obligations at that time of the year and that they will attempt to broadcast all 3 Eurovision Shows live on television. However they have in previous years given precedent to sporting events which apparently generate substantial revenue for the station. So the Spanish fans have created an analysis of the viewing figures for the National broadcaster which shows that when they broadcast the 3 live shows they also get a higher rating for the Grand Final. They also show the potential for the increased viewership of the Semi Finals that they are not voting in.

So what next?

Well the Spanish Fans have been diligent and have created several forums on face book and internet sites for you to lend your support to – links below

You have to ask yourself as a Eurovision fan – would you miss out on seeing the 2 semi finals? Personally I would as that is when you get to see all the contenders for the grand final and help you make up your mind about what is your favourite plus it is great fun. The Eurovision comes around only once a year and is one of the biggest live broadcasts in the world. Also for the countries that are not in the Spanish Televised Semi Final – are they at a disadvantage as the Spanish viewers will only have seen their semi final contenders?

This is an interesting dilemma. So if you feel strongly about this and would like to help your Spanish Eurovision Amigos – then please look at their links above – and maybe even support their cause should you see fit to do so.
