Eurovision 2023

#Eurovision2023: A history of each country’s Highs and Lows at Eurovision.

Rehearsals are well and truly under way at the M and S Bank arena in Liverpool and while the first week’s rehearsals are closed to press and fan media ,meaning that we are unable to bring you our usual live blogs of the rehearsals, we at Eurovision Ireland decided to take a look at the highs and lows of each country competing in Eurovision this year. Today we are going to focus on Denmark .

When did Denmark first enter Eurovision?

Denmark made their debut in the 1957 contest with Birthe Wilke and Gustav Winckler singing “Skibet skal Sejle i nat” and caused quite stir when they shared a lingering kiss at the end of the song. They finished 3rd with 10 points

What are Denmark’s high points at Eurovision?

Denmark have a reasonably good track record at Eurovision. Their highest points have been their 3 wins to date. Their first win was in 1963 when Grethe and Jørgen Ingmann won with their gentle song “Dansevise”. It still remains a well loved song in the history of Eurovision and was used as part of the opening music when Denmark hosted the contest in 2014.

In 2000, The Olsen Brothers took victory in Stockholm , Sweden, with their song “Fly on the Wings of Love “. Again, this song remains popular in Eurovision history.

In 2013, ironically again in Sweden , but this time in Malmø, Emmelie De Forest took Denmark to victory with her song “Only Teardrops”

What is Denmark’s lowest point at Eurovision?

Since the arrival of the Semi Finals, Denmark have failed to qualify for the Grand Final 6 times but their lowest point came in 2002, just a year after hosting the 2001 contest in Copenhagen. Malene Mortensen went to Tallinn as one of the favourites but unfortunately, her performance on the night was not the best and she came last with only 7 points.

How will Denmark do in 2023?

This year, Reiley won Denmark’s National Selection with his song “Breaking my heart”. Can he get Denmark back into the Grand Final again for the first time since 2019? He is in Semi Final 2 and opening the Semi Final. Let’s see if he can be successful, despite what is not a favourable draw for him.
