#BIRTHDAY: Gjon’s Tears from Switzerland is 24 today

As we know, past performance is no guarantee of future performance. As saw in Torino/Turin, a certain country who were runners-up in 2021 finished 24th in 2022.

One country that could be worth watching is Switzerland. Places in the last three Grand Finals, including top five finishes, mean we could see a Swiss contest by the end of the decade. Or they could fade into obscurity. In 2021, today’s birthday boy Gjon’s Tears (né Gjon Muharremaj) came third in 2021, part of a top three that weren’t sung in English. His staging may have polarised opinion, as it was either baffling or progressively groundbreaking depending on your perspective. But we do know that many had to wake up to what an internally selected song from the Helvetic Confederation could actually do.
