Captain Tom Moore has reached Number One in the UK charts in time for his 100th Birthday – making him the oldest person to hold the Number One position. He teamed up with Michael Ball (also his first Number One) and the NHS Voices of Care Choir to record a cover of “You’ll Never Walk Alone”.
All the money raised from the release, will go towards NHS Charities Together. Captain Tom Moore said the following on BBC Radio One:
“My grandchildren can’t believe I’m a chart-topper. We’re in this together, and I am forever grateful for your support. And this just proves ‘you’ll never walk alone.”
While Captain Tom Moore is not only the oldest and first 100 year old to hold a Number One, but he also is only the second person to go straight in at Number One with his debut single – after Whigfield and her song “Saturday Night”. It is also the fastest selling single of the year so far, while “You’ll Never Walk Alone” is only the third chart entry with four different versions at Number One.
Michael Ball insisted it wasn’t about him, saying:
“This is the most extraordinary thing, one of the most proudest moments of my career… But it’s not about me, it’s about Captain Tom. Thank you for giving him a Number 1 on his 100th birthday. You are the best, God bless ya.”
