Finland– Review of all the Finalists for 2017

Finland –  10 acts will compete for a place in Kiev and go on to represent their country in Eurovision 2017. The Final is being beamed live from the Espoo Metro Areena in Espoo on Saturday January 28th 2017 starting at 20:00 CET and I will be doing a LIVE rolling blog.

So in advance of the show I have listened to all the songs in the Final and given some thoughts on their chances of progressing to Eurovision in Kiev in May.  You can hear the songs on Youtube following this link.

So who will succeed in taking on the Finnish golden ticket from Sandhja who  failed to reach the Grand Final last year. We shall find out on the show on Saturday 28th January so remember to look back and follow the live blog.

Sandhja

Song 1 – Emma – Circle of Light

emma

Now this is the hot favourite on both the betting and the online fan polls. It has the opportunity to open the show which could help make it stand out or to be forgotten by too many by the end. The performance therefore has to be crucial here as there are a good few strong contenders on later on. The song is indeed a good example of a typical Eurovision favourite, it has a good tempo and beat to it and has a slight ethnic folk feel to it, it is the kind of style that has tended to do rather well most of the time. I sure think with a good performance it will stick in peoples minds. 9/10

Song 2 – Alva – Arrows

alva

Alva has the unenviable task of coming on second. Her song Arrows is a very modern pop ballad with a good beat to it. I do find the song very easy on the ear and would normally think this would have a good chance in the Final but there are a lot of good songs battling it out this year.  8/10

Song 3 – Günther & D’Sanz – Love Yourself

gunter_valmis_pk

These guys sure do look like they love themselves. The song is  almost a trance dance track and has a very infectious feel to it. First time I heard it I wasn’t that impressed but it has now grown on me and find myself grooving away to it quite happily. Finland have sent a song very similar to this in the past (Waldos People) so who knows. 8/10

Song 4 – Anni Saikku – Reach Out For The Sun

anni_valmis_pk_16_9

A gentle ballad with a good vocal and a nice build to it. Very contemporary once again and this is very easy to listen to. It has good back beat to it during the chorus. In any other competition I would give this a good chance but its going to be tough in this Final given some of the other good songs. 8/10

Song 5 – Knucklebone Oscar & The Shangri-La Rubies – Caveman

knucklebone-oscar-finland-umk-2017-600x400

Now this is more like it. Something I can slag off it is not a song for Eurovision. It is very guitar oriented but not in a good way. It sounds more like a really bad Musical song from a rock n roll themed show. I am sure there are a few out there that will love it but I hate it. Vile! 3/10

Song 6 – Norma John – Blackbird

norma-john-finland-umk-2017-600x400

Norma John is an Indie pop duo who give us a very haunting ballad. It is very simple and melancholic and could go down well with a good performance. It reminds me a bit of a Goldfrapp sort of sound in places. I like it a lot but don’t think it will win this competition. 7/10

Song 7 – Lauri Yrjölä – Helppo elämä

lauri%20yrjola

Lauri is a very cheery cheeky chap and he bring us the only song in this Final in Finnish. It is a very typical upbeat Finnish styled Eurovision song. Lots of heavy beats in there and a lovely melodic sounding vocal. When they give us a good song in Finnish the language really enhances the vocal. I love this!!!  A great song with some good eye candy to look at. Its a winner for me but will the public and jury agree? 9/10

Song 8 – Club La Persé – My Little World

club-le-perse

Now this is another big bold statement of a song. Its straight out of the early 80s club dance era and is so similar to Pete Burns/ Dead or Alive and the video is even dedicated to him. Crazy characters in the group Club Le Perse but that for me is a good thing as its even more eye opening. Anyone with a club dance bone in their bodies will love this, anyone who is just a little bit weird and crazy will love it too. I am a bit of both sometimes so guess what I love it too. But I don’t think the Finnish votes will fall favourably on it but I would love to see the reaction if it won. 9/10

Song 9  – Zühlke – Perfect Villian

zuhlke-finland-umk-2017-600x400

Ok now we are into the business end of this Final. We have a really good midtempo modern pop song that has a lot of edge and attitude to it. This would do well at Eurovision methinks and could well win it here in Finland. A serious contender. 9/10

Song 10 – My First Band – Paradise

my-first-band

On to the last song in this Finnish Final and we have a boogie beat of a pop song. Very uplifting and funky from our all male band(not a boy band). This could also certainly impress the voters considering its on at the end and could stick in the mind. A decent song this and I would be happy with this in Eurovision too. 8/10

So who is going to win in Finland? My head says its between Emma and Zühlke but my heart would love to see either Club La Persé or Lauri Yrjölä  go to Kyiv. But overall a good selection of songs to choose from.

So there we have it folks do you have a favourite in Finland? Why don’t you comment and tell us?

Remember to check back at 20:00 CET on Saturday 28th January for my LIVE blog of the full Final in Finland.
