Loreen to return to Melodifesitvalen

Well, dear readers, if you’re anything like me you too will be completely surprised (and delighted!) by the news from Sweden this morning.

The lineup for Melodifestivalen 2017 has been revealed by broadcaster SVT and there are a number of surprises in there for Eurovision fans. Charlotte Perrelli, twice a Melfest winner and winner of the 1999 Eurovision Song Contest with ‘Take Me to Your Heaven’ is back.

A few of last year’s Melfest contestants are back too, which probably comes as less of a surprise to you, Ace Wilder, Lisa Ajax, Robin Bengtsson, Krista Siegfrid and Wicktoria who finished in fourth place at last year’s competition with ‘Save Me’ all return with new songs and a desire to win.

But out the most surprising and unexpected returnee to Melfest is Loreen. Loreen won Melfest in 2012 and then went on to win the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest in Baku with ‘Euphoria‘, this song went on to be one of the most popular winning Eurovision Songs of all time.

I do have a question mulling around in my brain, ‘why’?

Since her win in 2012 Loreen has gone on to a enjoy a huge career in the music industry, she has released new music, toured in many different countries including touring with ‘Art on Ice‘, she Headlined at Life Ball in Vienna in 2015 and has received countless award nominations including 5 World Music Awards in 2014. Of course we saw Loreen on stage last year at the Eurovision party in the Tele-2 Arena in Stockholm so maybe that experience relit a fire inside Loreen to be part of this all again. Of course in Sweden, Melfest and the Eurovision Song Contest are taken seriously and representing Sweden at Eurovision is a huge honour. Sweden are looking for their seventh win to equal Ireland’s record and it looks like Loreen maybe chasing Johnny Logan’s personal record too! Sweden last won the contest in 2015 with Måns Zelmerlöw’s song ‘Heroes‘.
