POLAND: 10 things you didn’t know about Michal Szpak


After battling it out with 8 other Eurovision hopefuls, Michal Szpak has secured his place in Stockholm, representing Poland at Eurovision 2016. So who is this man with the glorious hair? Eurovision Ireland needed to know more so we got on the case and tracked down 10 facts about Michal Szpak.

Who is he? Michal was born in Jaslo, southern Poland and has two sisters and a brother.

How old? Michal was born on the 26th November 1990, making him 25 and a Sagittarius. By nature, Sagittarians are adventurous, positive and extremely confident. Something that could take him all the way to Eurovision victory.

Happy Birthday! Michal is in illustrious company, sharing his birthday with musical performers Jimi Hendrix, Tina Turner, Natasha Bedingfield and Charles Schultz, creator of Charlie Brown.

Early start: At the age of just nine years old, Michal started his singing career. It seems to have paid off as, at the age of 25, Michal is well on his way to stardom.

Musical influences: Michal cites as early influences; Queen, Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Marilyn Manson and Muse. The man has great musical taste!

Whiplash: As a teenager, Michal was in a high school rock band called Whiplash, where he played mostly hard rock.

Orange Warsaw Festival: Michal got his big solo break performing at the Orange Warsaw Festival alongside the likes of Skunk Anansie, Moby, My Chemical Romance, The Streets and Jamiroquai.

First album: In August of 2011, Michal scored a major coup when Polish PVC door and window manufacturer DRUTEX sponsored his first album. Now, that’s what I call marketing!

Award-winner: Michal has already won a clutch of awards for his musical performances. He was runner-up in Poland’s X-Factor 2011, received the Poland Style & Design Awards for Creative Performance & Achievement Emerging Talent (2011 also – big year for this man!) and is also a recipient of the Golden Samovar – Russian Song Festival 2013 in Zielona Góra. Along with this, he also performed on Poland’s version of America’s Next Top Model.
