REVIEWS

We start with Conchita dressed in white singing Rise Like A Pheonix. She welcomes Europe to Vienna.

All the countries are sitting in the green Room and are all individually introduced by Conchita in running order where then get up and walk up to the stage. We have lost sound now in the Press centre but still have pictures. We now have a heap of dancers on the catwalk.  Conchita now welcomes the hosts to the stage. It is very rough around the edges but it is a rehearsal.

1 – Moldova

Andrew:

A good opener to the show. Looks good on screen, sassy sexy and fun. The cop uniforms are just so funny. The vocals sound ok too. Possible qualifier.

Garrett

A cracking opener to the semi final – actually I think I saw several cracks from the dancers in their skimpy leather NYPD outfits. Arrest me and chain me up – Mild S&M is not something on offer in Marks & Spencer but it would be in the ‘Dine in For Two’ but I want this all for my self. Slick and had the audience jumping on their feet. A qualifier for me.

2 – Armenia

Garrett

Armenia did the right thing here and had lots of shots of the gorgeous Essai. I may not be a fan of the song but ‘Don’t Deny’ that these are 6 talented singers and they worked it. The camera shots were not there fully so they will need to sort that out with ORF. This will sit well with Juries but it will all depend on how the Public sees it. More musical and less contest

Andrew:

This is good, really come up in my estimation. Staging is simple which works well. Love the swirling patterns on the stage. Like the interaction between the singers and good camera work too. Likely qualifier.

3 – Belgium

Andrew:

Vocals were off right at the start for Loic. But he soon gets into his stride. Like the modern feel of the song and the modern dance moves.  Its came across well and could also be a possible qualifier.

Garrett

I am so happy that Loic got his ‘Rap Pap Pap’ goroove on. Black and wite rules the day in Belgium but I was happy with this performance from our young 18 year old. Sexy – can I say that about a teenager? Well it was. In with a chance now

4 – The Netherlands

Garrett

How many times can this woman win the Barbara Dex Award in one year. Trijntae has done it again and comes to the stage with an oversized jump suit that is totally unflattering. What was she thinking?? This is a great song but between the funeral veil, the jump suit and the backing singers wearing horrendous black t-shirts with what looks like white nipple tassles. How to make a god song bad 😦

Andrew:

Well another dress change for the Netherlands, still in black and still some cleavage but it looks more like a flowing jump suit than a dress. Vocally fine and certainly catchy enough. I still feel it could be struggling to go through though.

5 – Finland

Garrett

I know I am in the minority here but I like the Finnish song. This is punk and it is loud and proud. The guys from PKN did a great performance and the audience loved it.

Andrew:

A straightforward band performance here. Its an awful song but it may qualify based on the back story of the band. I do not like it at all.

6 – Greece

Andrew:

A powerful ballad here from Greece, Maria is a very strong emotive singer and this is beautifully staged with the circular spotlights backdrop.  She has a pianist on stage with her and I fell now this is a probable qualifier.

Garrett
Maria Elena is my Shakira look alike for the contest with a dress that makes you think ‘my mountains’ #JustSaying. This could be the news James Bond for the next movie. Dramatic and stands out well. Wind machine on full force and it looks good. Now where is Odd Job!

7 – Estonia

Andrew:

Stig’s vocals are flat at the start and brittle throughout. Elina has a nice vocal and combined it makes for a good sound. The camera work is great and moody. Still sure this will qualify.

Garrett

Hmmm – Stig is flat on the first line of the song like my energy levels. I need some sugar. This is not a live crowd pleasing song but looks good on camera. The intensity at which they stare at each other is like they are going to make mad passionate love of kill each other. Not the run away winner one thinks.

8 – Macedonia

Andrew:

Daniel in a cream trenchcoat. He is joined on stage by Merj. Some of the dancing and shuffles have been tamed down. The vocals sound good. Not a  lot wrong that’s for sure but whether its memorable enough its certainly a good rhythmic feel  to it. Last note is bad. Possible missing out.

Garrett

Ok – This is where I dish out some tough love. I love this song and I love Daniel and Merj. The think I loved about the performance in the rehearsals were the funky dance moves and the simple melody. Daniel has dropped the dancing and as a result the performance looks static for me. Daniel added in some riffs to the song which were new. The song doesn’t need them. The melody doesn’t need them. Please revert back to the rehearsal version Macedonia as I love this slice of RnB. I am worried now.

9 – Serbia
Garrett
I get the feeling this will be a case of ‘Saturday Night Fever’ as this slice of 70’s disco is going straight into the final. The show needs this dance gem and Diamonds are this girl’s best friend. Bojana rocks!
Andrew:I do love this song. Its camp and kitsch especially when it goes upbeat.  Some of Bojana’s vocals sounded slightly off key  but overall a good presentation. Possible qualifier.

10 – Hungary

Garrett

If you have been affected by this song then call ‘Song 10’. This song does nothing for me despite Boggie having a wonderful voice and being so pretty. The revolving machine guns on the stage backdrop really detracts from the song – which is a good thing! This is not a qualifier for me.

Andrew:

I was not a huge fan of this song but they made the presentation nice and simple and Boggie sings it very well indeed. I still do not like the guns swirling in the backdrop but understand the symbolism ties in with the message of the song. Probable qualifier.

11 – Belarus

Garrett

I am a huge fan of this song. You look at this duo and you don’t know which one is the sexier. Both of them are married – both of them are married though not to each other – yet the sexual chemistry is oozing from every pore. Welcome to the Grand Final Uzari and Maimuna

Andrew:

The staging is fine and the vocals are too. It’s a perfectly good song but it has nothing special going for it at all and I fell it could fall by the wayside and fail to go through tomorrow night. Sorry Belarus.

12 – Russia

Andrew:

Polina is on another level with her song. A big power ballad with great vocals and arrangement.  The staging with the group is simple but looks great. This is way ahead of many of the other songs and a definite qualifier and possible winner of the Semi Final.

Garrett

WOW WOW WOW – Polina has just hit a home run. This has been the best performance in this Semi Final by a MILLION miles. Angelic in white, engaging like me around a Viennese cake stand (Hmmmmmm) and powerful on the screen and in the hall this is flying into the Grand Final and I would say winning this Semi Final. A huge reaction from the audience which I was happy to see and hear. Not a single BOO and rightly so.

13 – Denmark

Garrett

Anti Social Media and for me Anti Social Behaviour as this song really leaves me cold. It is like they have been stripped of all character and been replaced by a Beatles and Monkey’s tribute act. This is contrived and manufactured. It is not in my Top 10 but I can see this qualifying and finishing close to the bottom in the final. There are other interesting in this semi final that deserve to qualify.

Andrew:

This song makes me smile. Its fun and bops along very nicely indeed. Again not a lot wrong here and as its different to all the others may stand out enough to qualify possibly.
14 – Albania

Garrett

If I wasn’t a gay man then Elhaida would be my woman! She is totally engaging, charming, stunning and so talented. I love her voice and her style. It is all understated and coming after Denmark this screams quality. For me this has to go to the final. I hope Europe thinks so too

Andrew:

This song is better than the contest. It is more a radio friendly kinda song. Some of the vocals do not have enough oomph  for me.  Do not get me wrong  Elhaida is a great singer with a great career already but I do not feel her presence in this performance except in the last minute where she does up her game. Marginal chance to qualify.
15 – Romania

Andrew:

Another song with a message. Voltaj are a big established act and it shows in this polished performance. Love the staging  of it and feel this will get through tomorrow night.

16 – Georgia

Andrew:

Nina lost her voice yesterday and I am amazed she is managing to perform this today. We can hear some obvious off notes . Also she has changed the melody so its not in such a high range. Clearly trying to save her voice for later. Overall it did sound dreadful but with the back knowledge I give her the benefit of the doubt she can deliver tonight and tomorrow night. The staging of it still looks fab. For me a definite qualifier unless her vocals fail to recover when it really counts.

Garrett

Ok – here is the news backstage. Eurovison Ireland has been told that the lovely Nina is suffering with a throat infection so Nina did the professional thing and held back on the vocals in this run through – saving herself for the Jury Voting show. She took the song down a key and she did hit a few flat notes. This is one of the better songs in this semi final but if Nina sings like that tonight – which I hope not – then she could be in trouble. Don’t rule Nina out.

We move onto the run through of all the songs along with voting numbers.

Andrew:

I will be missing for the Jury Final tonight which Elaine will be blogging. So I will pick my 10 qualifiers now based on what I saw this afternoon.

Armenia, Greece, Estonia, Hungary , Russia and Romania are definite for me. I would add Georgia based on she will deliver better tonight. That leaves 3 more spots.

Denmark, Serbia, Moldova and Belgium are the ones I would choose from and the one I will drop from that list is going to be Belgium. We shall wait and see how wide of the mark I am as this semi is a hard one to call.

So there you have our reviews for the day. What songs were you happy with? What ones disappointed you? What ones surprised you?

Let us know.

  1. It is a disgrace to the european’s that RUSSIA were allowed to enter, even though there is bad will at the moment, and this may be why theUcraine left out their entery this year.
