It’s Thursday’s Eurovision 2014 talent search for Ireland. We decided to look at new up and coming bands that people may not have heard of – but who are certainly worth keeping a close eye on. Eurovision has always been about trying to find that next big act. Here are our 3 Irish bands for your consideration.
- The iKonics
- Big September
- Solar Taxi
To say that I am excited by this new and vibrant band is an understatement! The iKonics bring a great Rock/Pop and RnB vibe to the Irish music scene that has been lacking for some time. The band have been together for over a year now and consist of 3 friends. Lead singer Dean is charismatic on stage and camera. He has been heavily influenced by Soul and RnB music. You can hear this is his voice and vocal range. He reminds me very much of Montell Jordan (“This is how we do it” fame) or from today, a younger Robin Thicke.
Wayne, is the guitarist of the band who has a passion for lyrics. His influences are based around classic guitarists from the late 70’s & 80’s, such as Lindsay Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac), Johnny Marr (The Smiths) & The Edge (U2). This is certainly a musical genre that is having a resurgence now.
Last but not least is Steve the piano/keys player. He is a classically trained musician who will play anything (steady now readers) from disco electronic lead synths, to ballads, to jazz, to Elton John style rock’n’roll. Is there nothing he cannot play?
These guys look like a real band and more importantly sound like a real band. Their music is of the moment and therefore we categorically ask RTE to get these guys to the Irish National Final in 2014. Their music is fresh and accessible to all ages.
This is the simplest recommendation we have EVER made – get The iKonics to Eurosong/Eurovision! Their début single above – “I’m not defeated” – is released on September 6th and MCD Promotions are hosting a launch concert/showcase for the guys at The Academy in Dublin on the same day. You can get your tickets here
What makes this even more special is that your ticket for the September 6th show will also be valid for a “Secret Concert” to be announced – that will be held on Halloween Night! The band is already on the FM104 playlist – which for our International readers is one of the largest radio stations in the country.
GET THEM TO EUROVISION – Have you heard me everyone. Fresh Irish Talent that we have to support. Remember who recommended them to you!
“Big September” are singer/frontman Scott O’Neill; Graham “Naylor” O’Neill bass/songwriter; Dan Smith drummer; Cillian Duane lead guitarist; and Dave Butler rhythm guitarist/ vocals. They are an Indie/Pop band who list their influences as The Beatles, The Clash, The Jam, The Rolling Stones, Ocean Colour Scene, Kings of Leon, Eric Clapton and Neil Young to name a few.
They have played along side acts like Imelda May and James Morrison at festivals and concerts in Ireland. So you know these guys can perform live with no problem. Big September’s latest top 40 hit, “The Preacher”, is a summer anthem that we have listened to for some time now. The song is highly contagious – as once you listen to it you will have a “song bomb” that keeps exploding in your head. Just the right balance of pop and rock to make this the perfect song that an audience and jury would both fall for – hook line and sinker.
Big September have played the Guinness Storehouse for Arthur’s Day/St Patrick’s Day and were the first choice for Irish rock band Aslan to support them. To add to this they look like one cool group of guys that makes them accessible. “Big September” could be Big in Europe.
They have also headlined Bray’s Summerfest and have sold out Dublin’s Whelan’s whenever they have played there. Again another great Irish band that could easily grace a European stage!
With a name like Solar Taxi you know that you are in for one “galactic ride” – and that is exactly what you get! “She Dies With Beautiful Teeth” – the new EP from Solar Taxi sounds like a title of a Lady Gaga song yet better that “Applause”. The EP has everything from electro pop to soulful acoustic songs. Diverse and fresh is what Solar Taxi are. This is due to their varied influences from Goldfrapp, The Knife to 70’s guitar bands such as Led Zeppelin.
Solar Taxi began when Aisling Browne (singer) and Peter Vogelaar (bassist and producer). Together they garnered the attention of legendary folk-king John Martyn, who became the bands mentor. His influence has added a further dimension to their musical sound.
June 2010 saw the band release 2 songs with remixes from Denmark’s Frederik Olufsen (who features on E4′s misfits soundtrack) and the Turkish DJ Soydan. Again they caught the eye and praise of major music figures like Tom Findlay (Groove Armada) and Timo Maas.
That same year Aisling and Peter added James O’Halloran on guitar & John Foley on Drums to the band. Branded a blend of “Brooklyn electro funk and downtown scuzz rock” by Hotpress. They are a band on the rise and one that could do well at Eurovision!
So there you have our 3 exciting bands that we suggest for Eurosong/Eurovision 2014. These bands certainly offer the audience a choice and could easily score well at Eurovision. What do you think?
