#BIRTHDAY: Laura Rizzotto from Latvia is 27 today

Nationality is a funny thing. Some countries taking part in our favourite TV show insist on someone who only hails from where they’re representing. Others have a more laissez-faire approach.

Today’s birthday girl Laura Rizzotto is of Latvian extraction, but wasn’t actually born there. She’s lived in Brazil and the USA, but won Supernova 2018 after an extensive competition. The Latvian public obviously didn’t care where she was from. Fast forward to a May evening in Lisbon, and she had to go through the bloodbath of a semi-final. It was a close-run thing, and another six point would have seen her through, especially from the televote. Still, it goes to show that you don’t have to be a native of a country to represent them.
