BIRTHDAY: Carita from Finland is 66 today
If you were a performer on the Eurovision stage, would you want to open a contest. Someone has to, and there’s debate on whether opening a contest is a good thing.
It might have been easier in former times to do well from being first on. So today’s birthday girl Carita Elisabeth Holmström must have thought she was in with a chance when she sat at her piano on a warm April evening in Brighton. She was taking advantage of the free language rule, she had the world at her feet. She didn’t quite count on being up against some Swedes with a slightly more catchy. And several other songs that pleased the juries more too. Four jurors out of 170 liked her song. That may not be much, but only 24 liked the one that won.
