So the show begins and welcome to Melodifestivalen 2018 from Karlstad. We have a modern dance troupe on stage in shorts and caps waving flags. Then our host David Lindgren emerges from the backdrop and sings the opening number for us called One Together. We are introduced to all the artists tonight.
Song 1 Sigrid Bernson – Patrick Swayze
The first song on tonight is from Sigrid Bernson. We have an upbeat pop song and Sigrid is dressed in denim shorts and a tied up white top with a yellow jacket. She has 4 dancers on with her in yellow and black outfits. This is a decent opener and she is singing it well. The song is certainly catchy and uplifting and the dancers are hot(both male and female). They also grab a guy out of the audience who finishes the number by lifting Sigrid above his head, maybe not from the audience after all.
Song 2 John Lundvik – My Turn
Up next is John Lundvik who is sitting at a grand piano dressed all in white singing this rather slow ballad. He gets up from the piano after the first verse and chorus. He is singing the song well and it is starting to build but I fear it is just not special enough to stand out from the crowd. We get a big golden shower of pyros towards the end.
Song 3 Renaida – All The Feels
Up next it is Renaida who has red braiding in her hair. She is wearing trousers and top that is black and red. The song has heavy almost African dance beats running through it and the song is rather mid tempo. I am not sure her vocals are on point either, slightly off key. She also had 6 male dancers wearing what seems to be EasyJet leisure wear. Ok but not sure it has what’s required to progress.
Song 4 Edward Blom – Livet på en pinne
Edward Blom up next with a song that is to say the least a bit off the wall. He is accompanied by dancers dressed as different bits of food(???) yes food!! Its a bit crazy if you ask me and why he is holding a giant fork I have really no idea. In fact I have no idea of any of it. Its so crazy it will probably progress. The dancers are now dressed as tables with glasses of bubbly on them. So bad but the Swedish audience loved it.
Song 5 Kikki Danielsson – Osby Tennessee
Well Dame Kikki needs no introduction, a legend in Sweden and Eurovision. She brings a piece of country style to the show. She wears a spangly golden jacket and a black trousers and top. She is half sitting on a stool and has a backing band on stage with her. The song is very mid to slow and a bit bland to be honest. Will Kikki’s status give her the votes she needs or will the public rate the song purely on its merits which are a bit low. We shall see soon enough.
Song 6 Kamferdrops – Solen lever kvar hos dig
So we have the song that nearly was disqualified for apparently surfacing 8 years ago. But here it is in all its glory. The masked Kamferdrops is dressed in pink tinfoil ( I kid you not) . They are now doing a magic routine with her in a box. The song has a distinct sax vibe to it. Suddenly she is in the audience and then there is 5 of them. The song itself was midtempo and a bit ploddy (is that even a word?). Surprised if it goes through but the standard isn’t that high tonight so who knows.
Song 7 – Benjamin Ingrosso – Dance You Off
The last song of the night and Benjamin certainly is a looker and is the son of Pernilla Wahlgren. So we have a family connection in Melfest and he has a good voice and confident style about him. He sang in the exact same spot in the second Semi Final last year and came 5th in the Final. This year he is wearing dark clothes and sings a dance number that is a bit of a mix of Justin Beiber and Michael Jackson. It is not a big blockbuster by any means but should be adequate enough to progress to the Final.
So there we have it all the songs tonight. We now will have a period where the public can vote and we are shown the voting numbers. Then we have a run through of all the songs.
While the votes are being counted we have Ebbit and the Indigo Children with an interval song.
We have the first result. The top 5 are Benjamin Ingrosso, Renaida, Sigrid Bernson, John Lundvik and Edward Blom.
Kamferdrops was 6th and Kikki Danielsson was 7th.
Another run through of the 5 songs left for another period of voting now.
We have the final result coming in now. Direct Till Final is John Lundvik with the song My Turn. He now will sing his song again. To Andere Chansen we have Renaida with All The Feel and Sigrid Bernsson with Patrick Swazye. Direct Till Final is Benjamin Ingrosso with Dance You Off. Edward Blom comes 5th and leaves the competition.
Benjamin sings his song again to close the show.
Thanks and good night from Scotland where I was in Perthshire visiting my cousin and had a dodgy wifi connection to tie in nicely with the dodgy songs. Hopefully next week we will see something better from Sweden. I sure hope so anyway.
Did Sweden make the right choices why don’t you comment below?
