You will be taken care of by the full team now who all joined our early bird Richard late on Day 1. We have Bogdan(our virgin), James, John, Andrew and perhaps even Phil (from Oneurope). So if you want an honest opinion of how the rehearsals are going then tune in here.   All members of the team will dip in and out of the blog unless they are busy filming, interviewing, gossiping, sleeping or just generally being lazy. We complete the line up today with the hosts and the BIG 5 who are all already into the Final.

Who do we have rehearsing today?

1 – Ukraine

JAMES: I’ve heard Ukraine perform live a few times now as they’re always at the EuroClub. It’s incredible live as the base hits you in chest and the sound swamps you. Watching it through a screen does lose a bit of this massive impact and it’s clearly an arena song, rather than a Eurovision home viewer friendly song. I think this performance will spare Ukraine last place, but anything higher than lower Top 10 is optimistic. But it’s a fantastic performance and the home crowd are bound to go wild!!!

RICHARD: I’m not too keen on this entry I must admit. And James is right, it doesn’t come across fully through the screen and you need to see it live to fully appreciate the full impact. It’ll do Ukraine proud and achieve what it needs.

ANDREW: Made it just in time for the last important run through. It is giving us exactly what it should some live energy combined with a rawness that should come with a rock song. The guys from the band have admittedly scrubbed up well and look more lounge rock. But it should to Ukraine proud and will go down well live whether this transfers to the voters on the screen we have to see.

2 – Italy

RICHARD: Francesco has achieved what he has needed to achieve – as Garrett would say, #fabulous. I can’t actually wait to see how this is like in the hall on Saturday night with all the fans waving their hands along – Namaste Ale! Winner, winner, winner!!!

ANDREW: Nothing wrong at all with this and a helluva lot right. This warms the cockles of my heart and is a huge crowd pleaser. Everything is right from graphics to vocals and vibe. The fact it is a big favourite is neither here nor there because it would win regardless of this. Top class winner.

3 – Spain

ANDREW: Both John and Richard are off to the Israeli hotel to do an interview with Imri. So meanwhile your stuck with me. Spain is trying to be a summer hit direct from the beaches of Palma Majorca or the Balearics. All the guys are in bright Hawaii shirts and the song is tuneful enough, the vocals are not  perfect by any means but it does have a certain quirkiness that may sway a few voters here and there. But I suspect this is destined to finish in the bottom 3 in the Final.

4 – Germany

ANDREW: Germany have really done themselves proud this year. The whole staging of this is slick and perfectly brilliant. A lovely catchy song sung beautifully by a confident Levina and she looks gorgeous with her grey modern slick outfit and lovely hairstyle. The bit at the beginning where she lies on the floor is spectacular. Overall this is ticking all the boxes for me and should give Germany their best place for a few years. Definitely off the bottom 5 for sure.

5 – United Kingdom

ANDREW: Lucie Jones is looking great now in a bright gold dress which sets off her backdrop to perfection. I really cannot believe this is actually the UK entry it is so well staged and sounding so good. The mirrored prop exclusively built in Ukraine really gives this a great dynamic and combined with the bursts of gold on the backdrop this at times looks quite spectacular. Amazing and if it was any other country I would say potential Top 5 but its the UK so Top 10 is the highest we can hope for. Well done UK.

6 – France

ANDREW: This is still not ticking all the boxes for me. Alma is certainly better vocally today but the whole staging is dare I say just naff. It is a bit of a mess and distracting and she looks totally lost alone on that big stage. France have here a good song which they have ruined with the staging and changing some of it to English. This could finish last in the Final.

  1. Sorry but I really don’t share your enthusiasm for Italy. I don’t doubt that he is a good performer but there are many other songs that stand out for me that deserve the win. All the hype around Italy may, unfortunately, backfire on them come the big night as there will be folk out there who have got fed up of the never-ending exposure to it from the Eurovision media, in my opinion. It also makes the contest less exciting where there is a certain runaway winner, 2009 and 2012 being good examples.
