SWEDEN: Melodifestivalen 2014 Cometh – Meet the first heat participants

MF SF 1 participants

We all eagerly await the series of Melodifestivalen shows. For many fans, these are the highlight of the Eurovision season, with many well-known names taking part. This year, the four Heats take place on 1, 8, 15 and 22 February. The Second Chance is on 1 March, with the Grand Final on 8 March from Stockholm’s Friends Arena. Here are the participants in the first semi-final, coming from the Malmö Arena.

1 YOHIO “To the End” (Andreas Johnson, Johan Lyander, Peter Kvint, YOHIO)

Last year’s MF runner-up, and doyen of the national spokesperson, Kevin ‘YOHIO’ Rehn Eires is back for another bite of the cherry. He’s song one, semi-final one, so is staking an early claim to a trip to exotic Copenhagen. You all know about him anyway from his antics in 2013. Here’s YOHIO performing in November 2013.

2 Mahan Moin “Aleo” (Mahan Moin, Anderz Wrethov)

Mahan is of Iranian origin and her song will reflect this. She is a huge star there, and some of her previous music has combined Iranian, Swedish and Western influences. This is her official video to ‘Asemoon’.

3 Linus Svenning “Bröder” (Brothers) (Fredrik Kempe)

Fredrik Kempe is a name we’ve come to know and love through the years. He’s also got a song in every semi-final so gets to see lots of Sweden this year. Here’s Linus with a cover of David Guetta’s Titanium.

4 Elisa Lindström “Casanova” (Ingela “Pling” Forsman, Bobby Ljunggren, Jimmy Jansson)

Another regular set of writers are behind this one. Pling has even had stuff in MF dating back to 1981! Elisa first came to the attention of Eurovision glitterati when as a 14 year old she took part in Lille MF in 2005. Here she is singing ‘River deep, mountain high’.

5 Alvaro Estrella “Bedroom” (Jakke Erixson, Jon Bordon, Loren Francis, Kristofer Östergren)

Alvaro is one of those elusive types who keeps himself to himself. So much so, his Facebook page tells us he’s a singer and dancer from Stockholm. He has appeared at Eurovision before as a dancer/backing singer – most notably with Eric Saade in 2011. Will he be just as “Popular” as Eric was?

6 Ellen Benediktson “Songbird” (Sharon Vaughn, Johan Fransson, Tim Larsson, Tobias Lundgren)

Ellen has already stood on a Eurovision stage. Was she a participant? Well no, but she stood in as Amandine Bourgeois during rehearsals for the 2013 contest, ironically in the same venue where she aims to get through to the MF final. Here’s her video covering ‘L’enfer et moi’.

7 Sylvester Schlegel “Bygdens son” (The neighbourhood’s son) (Sylvester Schlegel)

Maybe Sylvester doesn’t trust people, as he’s singing a song he’s written by himself. Here’s a teaser to one of his other songs.

8 Helena Paparizou “Survivor” (Bobby Ljunggren, Henrik Wikström, Karl-Ola Kjellholm, Sharon Vaughn)

What’s this? A former winner trying again? Helena has done her stuff before in Copenhagen – she must like the pølser there. The song could be one to watch, as it has an established name performing it and seasoned team writing it. Here’s Helena performing Eric Saade’s ‘Popular’ during MF 2011.

The presenters for Melodifestivalen 2014 are Nours and Anders and they have been busy preparing for the 6 week contest. It looks like the Swedes are out to reclaim the contest from their neighbours Denmark

We have also got our first look at the stage for Melodifestivalen 2014. Again SVT have spared no expense to make sure that the local and international audience will be suitably impressed.

If SVT do as they did last year – then we can hope to see a short clip of this weeks contestants during the week before the live show next Saturday. You know it is Eurovision Selection Season when Melodifestivalen gets started. Will this year see a surprise winner like “You”, that had to come through the Second Chance Semi Final to win Melodifestivalen – a first in the contest’s history.
