🇳🇱 #ESC27: Omroep Max Likely To Face External Budgetary Restraints

Omroep Max, the Dutch national broadcaster, could face external budgetary restraints in regards to participation, at the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest.

Omroep Max PREVIOUSLY talked about taking over Dutch participation, if AVROTROS stays away from the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest – however budgetary restraints faced by NPO will more than likely put an end to the proposal. Jan Slagter, the Director of Omroep Max, previously had the following to say:

Unlike AVROTROS, whose corporation is one of the largest in Dutch public television and has an approximate annual budget of €118.4 million, Omroep MAX is a much smaller broadcaster with an annual budget of just €47 million. Therefore, assuming the Netherlands’ participation costs all at once would destabilise its finances. As for NPO, it is unlikely to assume the full cost of the country’s participation, as it is currently implementing a severe plan of adjustments and financial cuts for the years 2026 and 2027. In fact, due to these budget reductions, Omroep MAX has already been forced to cancel some of its own television programmes.

Due to the budget cuts that NPO have faced, they have/or are closing both NPO 2 Extra and BVN on television, as well as NPO Campus and NPO Jazz & Soul on radio. These closures are in addition to the elimination of nearly 80 jobs, the cancellation of programmes planned for 2027, the reduction in the number of programmes and the increase in advertising.

Finally, the Dutch government is pushing for a deep reorganization of the broadcasting system, with the aim of merging the current 11 broadcasting associations (AVROTROS, BNNVARA, EO, Human, KRO-NCRV, Omroep Max, Ongehoord Nederland, PowNed, VPRO, WNL and Omroep Zwar) into four large entities by 2027. How these four new entities will look, have yet to be revealed.
