#BIRTHDAY: 9 May – Sanja Doležal is 63

You sometimes get an inkling when a country is on a road to a victory. They assemble suitable songwriters, find a popular groove, and then achieve success a few years later. That fate befell a country you won’t find on modern maps.

Back in the 1980s, our friends in Yugoslavia were having mixed fortunes. Then, in 1987 they recruited some writers from the then Socialist Republic of Croatia. Their first attempt was with the veteran band Novi Fosili, fronted by today’s birthday girl Sanja Doležal. One of those songwriters was actually in the band. Novi Fosili came fourth, and Yugoslavia hadn’t had a better finish at the time. But the songs by Messrs Dujmić and Cvikić continued, giving Yugoslavia its win two years later.
