So as the dust has long settled on Eurovision 2021 and we look forward to next year’s contest somewhere in Italy, we want to keep you entertained with all things Eurovision during the months where nothing much happens apart from news coming through from broadcasters about whether they are going to participate or not next year . With this in mind, we have decided to bring back our Hear Today, Gone Tomorrow series where we look at past Eurovision participants and hosts and look at what they are doing now, if indeed , they are still with us . Today , we are going to focus on ……

ANNA VISSI !

Background to Anna Vissi

Anna is Greek Cypriot, born in Pyla, Larnaca , Cyprus and has represented both Cyprus and Greece at Eurovision. She first started out on the professional music scene in Greece in 1973 , where she collaborated with other musical artists and also released her own singles whilst studying at the University of Athens. She is now an established singer, songwriter, actress, television presenter, radio personality and business woman. In 1977 she won the Thessanoliki Song Festival with the song “As Kanoume Apopse Mian Arhi” . In the 1980’s she met her husband Nikos Karvelas when collaborating in song writing with him. They sadly divorced in in 1992.

Anna had her first taste of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1980 when she represented Greece with the Epikouri with the song “Autostop ” back when the Netherlands last hosted before this year . She placed 13th with 30 points

Anna went on to try again at Eurovision in 1982, this time representing Cyprus with the song Mono i agapi . She came to Harrogate as one of the favourites. She did better than her previous experience, finishing 5th with 85 points.

After 1982, Anna continued with her professional career until 2006, when Greece were the Eurovision hosts , with Helen Paparizou having won in Kyiv ,Ukraine the year before. Anna was selected by ERT ,the Greek broadcaster to represent the country on home soil . Pre contest , she was tipped as one of the favourites to win, however, after a powerful performance on the night, she achieved 9th place with 128 points .

Life After Eurovision

Following her appearance at the contest in Athens, Anna remains a popular part of the Greek/Cypriot music scene , continuing to release singles , tour and appear in shows . She has also made an attempt at establishing a career abroad, although this has not been quite as successful as what she has achieved in her home countries .
