In his final act as Executive Supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest, Jon Ola Sand has declared Ireland the winners of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020!
The decision comes as a result of Ireland’s stellar Eurovision record since 1965. Having already won the contest 7 times, Mr Sand claimed it made sense that the 2020 title be awarded to Ireland in lieu of a contest taking place. Lesley Roy is therefore Ireland’s 8th Eurovision winner and Story Of My Life enters the pantheon of contest winners!
RTE spokeswoman Lána nAmadán says “We’re absolutely thrilled that Ireland has been awarded this great honour, especially in these trying times. We look forward to welcoming Europe to the spiritual home of Eurovision once more next year! Take that Sweden!”
We have contacted Lesley Roy and are waiting for her comments. Initial reports suggest that Cork, Dublin and Galway have all submitted bids to RTE regarding hosting the 2021 edition of the contest, although the EBU is still in discussions with Rotterdam, who may yet still host next year’s contest.
We here at Eurovision Ireland are delighted by the news and cannot wait to welcome you back to the Emerald Isle next year!
UPDATE: April Fool’s! 😉 Glad to see so many of you out there laughed and shared the post! 😀
