With Christmas just days away, many of us are starting to take part in those little traditions that make Yule tide so special. For some that’s baking, for others it’s decorating our homes and for some it’s watching those festive feel-good movies we watch every year!
One such film is Love Actually, a romantic comedy looking at the lives and loves of a group of Londoners in the run up to Christmas. The film proved a a huge hit when it was first released in 2003, taking almost 224 million Euros at the Box Office and becoming an instant Christmas classic in the process. Many of us watch the film every year, including some of us here at Eurovision Ireland!
But what some of you Eurovision fans might not know, is that a contestant from our beloved contest appears in the film – and not just in the background or in a crowd scene! Don’t believe us? Just take a look!
One of the many story arcs in the movie centres on writer Jamie, who heads off to the south of France to work on his novel. While staying there, he is introduced to Portuguese housekeeper Aurélia, played by Lúcia Moniz. Despite initially being unable to communicate, the pair form a close connection that blossoms as the film continues. Want to find out what happens to them? Ah, you’ll have to rewatch the film for that! 😉
As well as playing Aurélia in Love Actually, Lúcia Moniz is an accomplished singer and to date has released 5 albums. Her singing career is widely regarded as having taken off back in 1996, when at the age of 19 she won Festival da Canção with O Meu Coração Não Tem Cor – winning the contest by just 4 points. This then gave Lúcia the right to represent Portugal at the Eurovision Song Contest, which was being held in Norway that year.
On the night of the final, Lúcia placed 6th with 92 points. At the time, this was Portugal’s best-ever placing at the contest and remained so until Salvador Sobral lifted that glass microphone in Kyiv some 21 years later!
So there you have it – the Eurovision connection to Love Actually that may have passed you by! Yet another reason to watch this great movie! ❤
