Tere õhtust Europa and tere hommikust Australia, Tallin Calling!
I’m Bogdan and tonight I’ll do my best to keep you informed about the second semi-final of Eesti Laul 2018 – the show that decides Estonia’s representative at Eurovision.
If you followed our blog last Saturday, you already know the qualifiers from the first semi- final of Eesti Laul. But in case you need reminders, they are: Iiris & Agoh – Drop That Boogie; Stig Rästa – Home; Elina Nechayeva – La Forza; Sibyl Vane – Thousand Words and Vajé – Laura (Walk With Me).
Tonight’s second semi-final will feature 10 acts:
- Marju Lanik — Täna otsuseid ei tee
- Rolf Roosalu — Show a Little Love
- Frankie Animal — (Can’t Keep Calling) Misty
- Eliis Pärna & Gerli Padar — Sky
- Indrek Ventmann — Tempel
- Evestus — Welcome to My World
- Karl Kristjan & Karl Killing feat. Wateva — Young
- Metsakutsu — Koplifornia
- Girls in Pearls — Spellbound
- Nika — Knock Knock
Like in the first semi final, the first four acts to go to the final will be decided by a 50/50 combination between the jury and the public televote. After that only the public will have their say once again to decide the 5th qualifier for the grand final.
The show can be watched live via this official ETV link starting with 20:35 CET (19:35 for the ones in UK and Ireland). As an alternative, if you prefer youtube, there will be a live broadcast on the official ETVplus youtube channel .
You know the drill! Sit back and relax and refresh this page to see my comments and what’s happening next in Verona… Ok ok in Tallin! 😀
LIVE BLOG STARTS HERE!

- Marju Lanik — Täna otsuseid ei tee
If google is right, she’s singing about not taking any decision tonight…
She must be the Dolly Parton of Estonia. Such a calm and warm voice. It might seem outdated, but it’s quite pleasant to her. Just song no gimmicks.
I enjoyed that especially being sung in Estonian. It’s not a song for a big stage, but it’s a song to be enjoyed as it had a relaxing wibe.
2. Rolf Roosalu — Show a Little Love
Rolf is asking us to show him some love. Well with thouse blue eyes he can ask us anything :)))
He’s giving us a lots of disco. It’s just disco baby! We can boggie a little bit. It could have more moves though.
Not a bad song, but nothing new. Having said that, I enjoyed Rolf’s song. Nothing bad.
3. Frankie Animal — (Can’t Keep Calling) Misty
It’s kind of a lounge song, but the drum beat wakes you up when you least expect it. I might just be in a good mood, but I don’t have bad words so far. Sure, I can’t see it on the Eurovision stage, but I can see it on my playlist. I like!
I would have enjoyed their song if that quitar in the last part of the song would have blended more with the other instruments.
4. Eliis Pärna & Gerli Padar — Sky
The first ballad of the night. It’s an unusual duet, it gives me a Barbara Streisand vibe. “I will hold a single candle light for you”… nice lyrics even though they are not a novelty.
Their voices were clear and suited the song. The mirror reminded me of a musical. Again, a good performance.
5. Indrek Ventmann — Tempel
I can only guess that Indrek is singing about everyday life. He’s being shaved on the stage and someone gives him a mobile phone to talk. Selfies, money on the ground.
All kinds of weird stuff going on. It got my attention, the public seems to like it. It’s not my cup of tea. It has an infectious chorus made of some repetitive words, but that’s about it.
And that’s half of the acts so far. Curious what is still to come.
For the moment, the jury is being presented to us.
6. Evestus — Welcome to My World
Will this be the fire of the night? I could do with some dancing. Let’s see!
I don’t know what I am watching. If that is his/their world surely looks like something…
I was hoping for a fun act. I was underwhelmed by that. It was quite plain despite having potential elements for entertainment. Not much of a key change and nothing to take me completely by surprise. One can only hope…
7. Karl Kristjan & Karl Killing feat. Wateva — Young
Finally something I can dance and sing along. Not the best song ever, but compared to what we heard tonight, surely this one is my favourite.
They could work a lot more on the staging, but the song sounds good, their voices are on tune. Also they coudl try and pretend they are friends. It has my vote tonight. (P.S. Try to interact more , it looked like two magnets with the same pole).
8. Metsakutsu — Koplifornia
While I appreciate the effort, this rap combined with a lots of special effects on the screen and voice, almost gave me seizure. I was happy it ended. This style never done well on the main stage of Eurovision. I don’t think it could start doing well now.
Sorry, but no. I have a feeling though that the public enjoyed that. At least the ones that escaped sane… You surely can’t expect much when about half of your song is one word… ya ya ya… NO!
9. Girls in Pearls — Spellbound
No, it’s not a special effect. They are twins. I’m so meh about it. It sounds dated and plain.
They both have good voices, but I’m not spellbound. Still waiting to be…
I close my eyes and I’m in the 80’s ; I open my eyes and I’m still in the 80’s.
Good effort but I don’t see this qualifying.
So far this Semi Final is much weaker than the first one. Could this last act bring some balance back?
10. Nika — Knock Knock
Finally something to get my attention. I have mixed feelings about this one, but surely it is the best of the night.
It has a good show, she has a great presence and while the dancers look like creatures from horror movies, I enjoyed that.
It would have been better if the song would have been a bit more upbeat, but I am happy with that considering the whole night. For me, this is a definitely qualifier.
The lines will be open soon and Estonia will vote for their favourites. I do have to say I have to really think who will go through… I have so far only two songs in mind.
Estonia start voting now!
Ok, the recap made me decide for MY qualifiers:
Rolf Roosalu — Show a Little Love; Eliis Pärna & Gerli Padar — Sky; Indrek Ventmann — Tempel; Karl Kristjan & Karl Killing feat. Wateva — Young and Nika — Knock Knock
It seems Estonia really wants to go operatic. We are now presented Verona in the style of Opera.
While I love Elina this year and her song, in this case I prefer the original version of Verona ❤
Estonia stop voting!
Soon we’ll find out the first four qualifiers, but for now the jury is giving us their opinion.
So the first foru are:
- Nika — Knock Knock
- Frankie Animal — (Can’t Keep Calling) Misty
- Karl Kristjan & Karl Killing feat. Wateva — Young
- Evestus — Welcome to My World
It’s time for the public to choose the 5th finalist. In a few minutes we’ll find out.
And the 5th finalist is:
- Eliis Pärna & Gerli Padar — Sky
Thank you all for following this blog! Congratulations to the ones that qualified for the final. Good night and see you tomorrow at the 5th Semi Final in Romania!
