The World will be coming to terms with the sad news of Nelson Mandela’s death in South Africa. Many Eurovision Winners, Performers, Writers and Commentators have been paying their respects to this great man on Twitter. For some, our first tweet comes from British Singer Labi Siffre who wrote the classic 80’s song “Something Inside So Strong”. Siffre came out of self-imposed retirement from music in 1985 when he saw a television film from South Africa showing a white soldier shooting at black children after which he wrote “(Something Inside) So Strong”. This song was adopted as an unofficial anthem for change in South Africa that Nelson Mandela was the beacon for. However Labi Siffre will have a direct Eurovision connection later on.

Nelson Mandela was a peaceful man and he always looked for the common bonds between people as he had striven to rebuild bridges between people in his beloved South Africa. One Eurovision song seems appropriate at this moment in time. A young German girl in 1982 had a guitar and a simple message which simply says it all.

Finally we go back to where we started off with Labi Siffre. He attempted to represent the United Kingdom at Eurovision in 1978 with his soulful “Solid Love”. A fitting tribute to Nelson Mandela who did just that an “offered his solid love” to his people and country.

“Death is something inevitable. When A man has Done What he considers to be His Duty to His people & His Country, he can rest in peace” # Madiba

Nelson Mandela may you Rest in Peace
