ByeAlex brought Hungary to the Top 10 at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Malmo. Following the contest – despite some questionable hairstyles – ByeAlex have continued to release some interesting and diverse music.

The band have just released their new song “Messziről” which could not be further from their easy listening Eurovision entry “Kedvesem”. “Messziről” or “From a Distance” – not to be confused with the Nancy Griffith folk classic of the same name – is an angry sounding rock/grunge song. Plenty of guitars and drums that at times overwhelm the vocals, but isn’t that what grunge music is all about? I could hardly tell you the full lyrics of any Nirvana song – as you couldn’t hear them.

You get the feeling that the band are having their Miley Cyrus rage against the cute image moment – although ByeAlex are not as attention seeking as the former Hannah Montana singer.

Do I like “Messziről”? It is not as instant as their 2 earlier offerings this year but after some time on my headphones, I am either liking this song or I just can’t hear it anymore. I would have to go with the former. It is almost an unspoken rule that exists – “Eurovision Singers are not permitted to do hard rock songs”. It is almost frowned upon with the tag line “Rock and Rap don’t work at Eurovision” – I am tired of hearing that old and weary one liner.

Despite the blip of Lordi in 2006 – there has not been a rock winner at Eurovision, but there have been some great rock songs – Eldrine from Georgia in 2011 (my favorite from that year) and Manga from Turkey in 2010 to name a few.

What “Messziről” proves is that ByeAlex are diverse and with that it makes them interesting. Since May we have had the charming “Kedvesem” which was followed up by the amazing trance/dance song “Nekemte” – which remains the most impressive follow-up single to date released by a 2013 artist yet.

ByeAlex are one band that sneaked in under the radar at Eurovision 2013 and are slowly becoming more interesting with their eclectic sound/music.
