We all know that Eurovision is a cut-and-thrust affair. You have three minutes (or possibly six) to sell yourself to that viewer in Switzerland or Finland, and that can be tough. So, apart from a decent song, how do you stand out?

well, one way is your choice of outfit. Do you go for a classic suit or evening dress? Or something more quirky? Today’s birthday girl Dora Maria Reis Dias de Jesus tried both approaches in two separate contests. Daring in 1986, and then more classical two years later. Despite these touches, her songs – like many Portuguese ones of the time – failed to light up the scoreboard, but at least she experimented. We’ve gone for her individualistic look from the Bergen contest of 1986. Would she have done better in an evening dress?
