Eurovision 2021

Where are they Now ?

Last week saw the start of the official Eurovision year and the announcement of the 2025 host city as being Basel, in Switzerland . To start off the build up to National Final Season and the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, we at Eurovision Ireland felt it would be timely to continue with our Here Today, Gone Tomorrow series , where we look at past Eurovision performers and where they are and what they are doing now . As Switzerland are our host country for 2025, we have decided to focus this series entirely on the past Swiss performers at Eurovision .

Today , we are focusing on what many would consider to be one of the most memorable Swiss acts, for those of us who were around in the 1970’s and early 1980’s , Peter , Sue and Marc.

Peter , Sue and Marc are known individually as Peter Reber, Sue Schnell and Marc Dietrich . They got together in 1968 as a trio . They have had the honour of representing Switzerland at the Eurovision Song contest four times . The first was in 1971 , where they sang a song in French ” Les illusions de nos vingt ans” which got them a 12th place .

They came back to the contest in 1976 with a song sung in English “Djambo , Djambo ” when they got a very credible 4th place .

Peter , Sue and Marc returned to Eurovision again in the 1979 contest , this time with a song sung in German “Trödler and Co “, this time featuring Pfuri , Gorps and Kniri . This time they finished in 10th place .

Just when we thought we wouldn’t see Peter, Sue and Marc at Eurovision again, Switzerland decided otherwise and sent them to the Eurovision Song Contest in 1981, with probably the best out of all their Eurovision entries, a song in Italian called “Lo Senza Tei “. They came in 4th place , unable to beat a certain band ripping off skirts that year !

Peter , Sue and Marc remain the only participants in the competition to compete in 4 different languages for their country .However, taking part at the contest was not their only involvement in the competition. They also tried to represent Switzerland in other years too. They came 3rd in the 1973 Swiss selection process with “Es kommt ein tag “. In 1974, they missed out again with the song “Frei ” .

In 1975, they finished second in the Swiss National heat with “Leve -toi le soleil “

Peter Sue and Marc disbanded in 1981 , after selling over 2 million records in Switzerland , finding success abroad and holding concerts in many countries After the group broke up, Sue had several solo hits, mostly in the English language . Ironically , one of those songs is called “Don’t play that Song again” , a song title which would appear at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2000 , when Nicki French sang for the UK with that same song title .

Peter Reber also took part in Eurovision again, this time as a composer . He wrote and conducted the song “Cinema ” sung by Paola , who represented Switzerland in the 1980 contest at The Hague, Netherlands.

He also composed Swiss Lady by the Pepe Lienhard Band .

Peter , Sue and Marc have occasionally come back together to make one-off appearances at concerts . Last year , after 35 years, they reunited on a Saturday evening show ” Hello Again”,broadcast by SRF , the Swiss Broadcaster .They sang a medley of their greatest hits .

We at Eurovision Ireland are sure that Peter , Sue and Marc will remain fondly remembered in the history books of Eurovision for many years to come . Could SRF invite them to make another one-off appearance next year at the contest in Basel?
