Tonight see’s the return of Melodifestivalen – with all six shows this year coming from Stockholm, with no audience. For Semi Final 1, Christer Bjorkman will be joined by Lena Philipsson for hosting duties – Christer will be joined by somebody different each week.
Join me, Richard, from 19:00 GMT/20:00 CET as we follow the fun and frolics that the Swedes have for us this year! Don’t forget to refresh the page to get the up-to-date comments!

And we are off! Welcome to Melodifestivalen 2021! Christer Bjorkman welcomes the Swedish nation to the start of the nations search for the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 over a video montage.
And we are in the hall, with Lena Philipsson at the piano, giving us a song. With no audience this year, the stage looks very deep – presumably for camera shots where the audience would normally be.
Sadly false audience applause is in use. Lena welcomes us to the show and then welcomes Christer to the stage. Christer is now talking us through the voting methods – via the app and the phone. Here is the introduction to tonight’s artists.
We now have a Lena sketch.
Kadiatou – One Touch
While the song writers are unable to be in attendance, they do get to introduce themselves virtually this year. Christer gives a brief bio of each artist before each performance. Kadiotou is dressed in a white number, as are her four backing dancers. We have some quite vibrant pink LED graphics. One Touch is quite a nice little bop to start this year’s Contest and is the type of entry that’ll be heard in your local clubs for years to come.
Lillasyster – Pretender
We have some fire on stage for this Little Rock number. Rock, the genre famous for representing Sweden at Eurovision. Sadly I find this noisy and tuneless in places. The band is formed of four members and are dressed accordingly for the genre. A lot of flashing lights, which isn’t good for epilepsy suffers amongst you. I can’t see this progressing far.
Jessica Andersson – Horizon
Jessica Andersson is a stalwart of Swedish Eurovision, having already represented her nation as part of Fame. Tonight, Jessica has brought a different tone that we are used to from her. It’s less party and more uptempo ballad. She is dressed in a long greenish dress, surrounded by four backing dancers in similar colours. While a different tone, it’s certainly anthemic and Jessica could do well.
Paul Rey – The Missing Piece
Paul Rey is on a raised platform, with a bigger than normal microphone. This is quite an emotive piece with his voice and hand gestures. While staying emotive, The Missing Piece moves from a slow number to something that is quite uptempo. A warm orange lighting is used throughout.
Arvingarna – Tänker inte alls gå hem
Arvingarna have been suited and booted, with sparkles for this appearance at Melodifestivalen. The stage set reminds me of Tonight Again, Australia’s debut in Eurovision back in 2015. Again, the lighting is veery pink, but Arvingarna have brought us yet another uptempo bop. A key change is also chucked in for good measure. Surely this has a chance?
Nathalie Brydolf – Fingerprints
Nathalie has brought us a singing down the camera lens entry. A simple emotive performance is accompanied but great camera connectivity. While this is a nice song, have the song writers gone too safe on the other hand? Only time will tell when the voting takes place.
Danny Saucedo – Dandi dansa
Danny Saucedo is back competing for the first time since 2012. He is dressed in a tie-dye number, while performing this modern number on a moving piece of stage. His two backing dancers are certainly getting their groove on. The decision to perform in Swedish has paid off and he should do well.
The voting has now opened. We are now treated to a recap of tonight’s entries. Another Lena sketch is now in play. The voting (the first round) has closed.
Through to the second round of voting are: Kadiatou, Lillasyster, Jessica Andersson, Paul Rey, Arvingarna, Nathalie Brydolf, Danny Saucedo. Kaditou and Nathalie Brydolf have fallen at the first hurdle.
The second round of voting for the evening has opened. Christer and Lena are having a conversational moment before a Melodifestivalen/Eurovision history segment. Tonight’s voting has now closed. Here we go!!! Well nearly.
Lena is leading us into the results with a cabaret act that some might consider better best forgotten. Here we really go!!!
First direct to the Final is: Danny Saucedo – Dandi dansa
Through to Andra Chansen are: Paul Rey – The Missing Piece & Lillasyster – Pretender
Second direct to the Final is: Arvingarna – Tänker inte alls gå hem
Jessica Andersson finished in 5th place in this Semi Final.
Join us at the same time next week for Semi Final 2!
