So the show begins as we zoom into the Saku Suurhall the venue for tonight. We start with a guy on a piano giving us a rendition of Ott’s Kuula, then Laura comes on to sing Waterfalls. By god she is standing in a Waterfall of water getting wet and singing into a live mic. How they do that? Then we have Koit singing his song from last year Verona. Then Laura comes on to join him after a quick change and rub down with a towel. Actually a better performed version of their song than in Kiev last year.
Our hosts Ott and Meelit come on to warm welcome. The give Laura some flowers and Koit a huge map of Verona then he disappears behind it. We are introduced to all the artists for tonight.
Song 1 – Karl-Kristjan & Karl Killing (ft. WATEVA) – Young
The audience all have joysticks for this one. Two young lads singing a youthful song with good modern touches to it. The have the words of the song in the big backdrop behind them, all very brash and bold. Truthfully its a pleasant enough modern pop song that is sung well by our two youthful lads. We also get on screen graphics to enhance the overall effect of this song.
Song 2 – Eliis Pärna ja Gerli Padar – Taevas
Gerli is back to try for Eurovision once again. Tanel’s sister represented Estonia before. This time she is joined by Eliis and the staging has a rather large prop that looks like a large frame depicting a mirror perhaps. The two singers stand either side of the frame. Its a lovely slow ballad with Iliis singing the first part alone, then Gerli take on the mantle. Both are very accomplished singers and compliment each other well. Gerli is left on stage alone at the conclusion of the song. A nice performance.
Song 3 – Nika – Knock Knock
Nika starts on a platform with dry ice swirling around. She sits centre stage with her legs astride. She is accompanied by very athletic male dancers. The song is very surreal really. The performance is enhanced by the backdrop and dancers. Her vocal is quite extreme and unusual but it works for the style of the song. Not bad but not a winner.
Song 4 – Sibyl Vane – Thousand Words
Sybil has a very uptempo rocky number next sounds very like The Pretenders. She wears a big red rimmed hat and a checked black and white jacket. She strums away at her guitar and give a real good account of herself. This fairly bops along and is very catchy. This is a surprising l y good performance. Gone right up my estimations. Best of the night so far from me.
Song 5 – Stig Rasta – Home
Another one who is no stranger to Eesti Laul or Eurovision is our Stig. He represented Estonia along with Elin then the following year as a writer of Estonia’s song. This year he is back on his own and strumming his guitar. Its a very melodic pleasant song . This sort of song has been done at Eurovision a few times now and mostly is well received. This would also not look out of place on the big stage. Stig’s vocals are not 100 % but it adds to the charm and rawness of the song. Could reach the Superfinal.
Song 6 – Vajé – Laura (Walk With Me)
Vaje up next with a song that has a slight country feel to it. It is a good pop song that is highly fancied. He stands on stage with a laser light bathing the stage behind him. Dancers hands come forth from the beam. Nice effect. Vaje is singing his song very confidently and giving his all. This does have a fair chance of progressing too tonight.
Song 7 – Elina Nechayeva – La Forza
Elina is the hot favourite tonight though with her Opera inspired ditty. She is wearing a huge frock. Its plays its part during the performance with lighting graphics used on it. Elina sure is an accomplished singer. Amazing range and voice. The graphics on the dress is amazing too. A great opera inspired song is screaming winner at me right now. The last note is sooooo high and she hits it with aplomb. Great great great. Love it.
Song 8 – Frankie Animal – (Can’t Keep Callin) Misty
Frankie Animal consist of a three piece bunch of guys with a girl singing the vocals. The song is very mid tempo and plods along with out giving out to many good vibes in my direction. This has the least amount of interest and is quite forgettable to be honest. I cannot see it threatening any of the big guns tonight.
Song 9 – Iiris & Agoh _ Drop That Boogie
Iiris is up next with her song. She starts off lying on a sofa. Her voice is modern and contemporary very Meghan Traynor in its sound and style. She is accompanied by two female dancers in masks. She is very lively and confident in her delivery. She also dons a guitar towards the back end of her song. Nt sure if it will threaten to proceed but lively enough and well received by the audience.
Song 10 – Evestus – Welcome To My World
Our last song of the evening certainly is an eye-opener. Two drag queens as backing singers wearing goldfish bowl helmets and blue faces. It has all a very crazy goth feel to it. We have fire around the drums and its all very frenetic really. Its a crazy performance of a crazy song. Plus it lasts barely two minutes which is relief to be honest. It could shock and reach the superfinal though.
So we have heard all of the songs and we will go to a 35 minute break in the program until we come back to the results show. So come back soon to see who gets to the Superfinal and then ultimately who will go to Lisbon for Estonia.
My prediction to go to the Superfinal is
Elina Netavjeva, Stig Rasta and Sibyl Vane. Lets see if I am right when we return for the results soon.
We are now back with the results show and 15 minutes more to vote. We get another recap of all the songs.
