Eurovision 2015

SWEDEN – Listen to Smajling Swedes the first contestants of Melodifestivalen 2016

Smajling Swedes

Oh it’s that time of the year again! Yes Eurovision 2016 is upon us. So dust off the ‘Heroes’ cobwebs and lets listen to the first confirmed contestant of Melodifestivalen 2016.

SVT has again kept its word (well not really)  and granted the winner (well the Jury Choice) of the Swedish contest Svenkstoppen Nasta an automatic place in the heats of Melodifestivalen 2016, as Sweden search for their Eurovision 2016 representative.

8 contestants competed in the competition and the winner was Michael Fannon with the songKommer tid, kommer råd’ however the Jury decided to put the trio electro band Smajling Swedes through to Melodifestivalen 2016.

Ok people this is the first time that the Jury has over-ridden the eventual winner of the contest.

It is unfortunate that Smajling now have to go away and find a new song for Melodifestivalen as they had a retro 80’s/90’s electro vibe going on. Best way to describe them is a young Swedish #The Beloved’. You remember the song ‘Sweet Harmony’.

Last year Kalle Johansson won the right to take part in Melodifestivalen 2015. Like many of his predecessors he failed to make the Grand Final on the national stage for the Swedish Eurovision National Selection.

The winner of Svenkstoppen Nasta sees new Swedish talent step up against seasoned artists from the Swedish music scene at Melodifestivalen.

If Smajling Swedes can come up with a song like ‘Goosebumps’ then they could be in with a chance of progressing from their Melodifestivalen Heat!

However reading the on-line comments a lot of people are feeling rather annoyed (well a tad peeved at Michael Fannon not going to Melodifestivalen). Anyone else think he has a look of Danny Saucedo about him? He has that all important Schlager sound teamed up with some old school RnB Pop that gave me a warm fuzzy feeling in places that I shall not mention – Oh ok…In Dublin 😉

As for Smajling Swedes they are not your classic Swedish Schlager act!

Have SVT missed a chance by not sending Michael Fannon to Melodifestivalen? Have SVT made a smart choice by sending SMAJL? Are they what Sweden is looking for at Eurovision 2016? Will 2016 bring a relatively unknown act to our attention like in 2013?
