RTE’s Head of Delegation at Eurovision – Michael Kealy – has been in communication with Eurovision Ireland in regards their plans for Eurovision 2014.
RTE, like our site, have been inundated with requests on the Irish Eurovision Selection Process for 2014. Michael Kealy today informed Eurovision Ireland that RTE are looking at their potential options for the Irish Eurosong 2014 Final.
Mr Kealy said that he is currently meeting with the new “Head of TV Entertainment” – John McHugh – and they are looking at all options for Eurosong 2014. They are also reviewing the findings from the National Broadcasters Meeting in Berlin that took place last week – see here – to look at what other broadcasters are using to select their Eurovision entry.
Mr Kealy advised that RTE are looking at all options for Eurosong 2014. This ranges from the current mentor system, to a potential return to full stand alone Eurosong final, to what Radio options are available to the broadcaster. Once all options are evaluated, RTE will then communicate to us here at Eurovision Ireland.

Submissions
As for song and artist submissions – all those interested in Eurosong 2014 should wait until the official submission process/dates are announced before sending any material into RTE. We will also post and promote the details on Eurovision Ireland’s Social Network and Website, when a final decision is made by RTE. A decision is expected shortly on Eurosong 2014. We suggested looking at “The Hit” as a potential forum for 2015 – which was well received.

Ireland have successfully qualified for the Grand Final of Eurovision for the last 4 consecutive years – Niamh Kavanagh (2010), Jedward (2011 & 2012) and Ryan Dolan (2013). Jedward took Ireland to 8th place in Düsseldorf with the song “Lipstick”.

I have a song written for the last few years with Niamh Kavanagh especially in mind.I just have no idea how to go about recording it.I wrote it before news broke that Niamh was going to enter for the second time in 2010.I would love the idea of “The Hit”format to be used as I feel it gave the undiscovered songwriters a chance.
Yes we liked “The Hit” too Fergus. Would you consider your song for Eurovision 2014?
I do hope they go for a separate Eurosong. I have said it many times. The Late Late Show is not the right platform. While the ratings might be high it just doesn’t work and Ryan Tubridy has no interest and it comes across. and we don’t need half baked guest waffling on about how each entry is ‘great’ and ‘would do well’ It’s time for change to match those in other countries. Also TLLS studio is awful for the artists to perform in although at least we know that there will be a complete overhaul of the performance as the winning entrant transfers to the bigger stage and it usually looks and sounds so much better. I am ever hopeful for something good next year. Perhaps they could use something like The Hit to find a decent song? Just an idea.
If I win the lottery martin I will hire the O2 out for them – I promise. I hear what you are saying though. I loved The Hit and it could be a great way to select a song in some format. Also it would give chart success to up and coming artists/writers
Interestingly, even Ryan Tubridy said this year (after Eurovision) that he doesn’t think The Late Late Show is an appropriate forum for Eurosong and that it should be a separate standalone contest,
The Hit would be a fascinating way of picking the Irish Eurovision entry. The series was definitely a success and could prove as good a way as any of finding a good song and performer.
