#BIRTHDAY: Ami Aspelund from Finland is 70 today

Finland. Who doesn’t love Finland. A land of content people, vast expanses of nature and a language many people have been known to find incomprehensible unless there’s a “cha” or two involved. And it’s fair share of very underrated songs.

Today’s birthday girl Ami Aspelund – or was it Aspezund – marched to Munich and got on the hallowed stage, following in the footsteps of her sister Monica. How would this sibling rivalry end? Well, the songs were both in the magical Finnish language, and were very Finnish in outlook, and they both had the same conductor. But Ami came off second best, even though she had Pave in her backing crew. Ten juries voted for her, which was over half of those that could. And we know Finland had some very underplaced songs in the 1980s. These days, a song like Ami’s would hopefully do better. So at least she can take comfort that her song is more well-known than most from 1983.
