#ESC22: Four Cities Officially In Host Bid Race

Tonight at 22:59 BST/23:59 CEST, the deadline for handing in Host City bid submissions passes. Over the coming weeks, RAI, the Italian national broadcaster and the EBU, will examine each of them before an announcement is made. So who has submitted official bids?

Turin

On Friday, Chiara Appendino, the Mayor of Turin confirmed their bid submission. She had the following to say:

“I signed the application letter yesterday. We are talking about the most followed non-sporting event in the world. With hundreds of millions of spectators, worldwide visibility of our Turin and indisputable economic repercussions. With the extraordinary victory of the Måneskin at the last Eurovision it is up to Italy to host the next edition.

We are applying because our city has all the credentials and we believe it is the best option in the field on which to make the choice. We have spaces with suitable capacities, in the heart of the city and easily accessible. As far as hospitality is concerned, our accommodation offer is able to accommodate the thousands of people that the event will attract.

But – among others – there is another fundamental point that should lead to choosing Turin: we will already be a proven stage for international events that we have brought here in recent years, capable of putting the skills of an entire city at the service of ‘Eurovision. Not only.

Also thanks to these events, Turin has recently become a Ryanair hub, guaranteeing even more air connections between Turin and the rest of the world. We are ready and determined. As always, we will do our best to bring Eurovision to Turin and leave this legacy to the citizens as well. Good luck, Turin.”

Pesaro

On Friday, Matteo Ricci, the Mayor of Pesaro, also confirmed their bid submission. He had the following to say:

“We fall within all the parameters required for participation, they explained. Among these the presence of an international airport no more than an hour and thirty minutes away, a hotel offer of over 2000 rooms in areas adjacent to the event and infrastructure, the Vitrifrigo Arena, which meets the necessary criteria.

The palas is one of the largest in Italy, among the most beautiful and evocative settings for hosting concerts and shows.

Pesaro is a UNESCO City of Music, it boasts an important musical tradition in continuous evolution and dynamic cultural life that has constantly favored a climate of experimentation and dialogue between all the arts.”

Bologna

Bologna have confirmed earlier today, that they have submitted an official bid. If they are chosen as the Host City, the Unipol Arena is the proposed venue. Also the bid mentions Saturday 14th May 2022 as the date of the Grand Final – however any dates are yet to be announced by the EBU.

Jesolo

Also today, the President of the JesoloVenice Consortium, also confirmed their bid submission. They had the following to say:

“Ours is a city with an international vocation, used to hosting and organizing large events. I remember that, if we look at the last few years, in Jesolo we have had events such as the Beach Bum Rock Festival, Miss Italia, the Full Moon Dj Superstar, the Air Show (the largest and most important civil air show), the Coca Cola event. Live Mtv… until the Ironman that we will have in September, in a region often home to world-class events, such as the Cortina Olympics.”

It should be noted that the chosen venue by Jesolo, fails to meet the capacity and technical requirements set out in the bid requirements.

Other cities may have submitted bids, but have yet to publicly declare this – only time will tell if there are more potential cities.
