Eurovision Interviews

#INTERVIEW – Eurovision Ireland chats to Junior Eurovision star Chanel Monseigneur from #MALTA

We’re weeks away from the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2020 and although it’s going to be a very different contest this year, we’re still as excited as ever! And someone else who is also very excited is 9 year old Chanel Monsiegneur, who is singing ‘Chasing Sunsets’ for Malta!

Eurovision Ireland were lucky enough to catch up with Chanel and discuss her preparations for the contest in November. What does Chanel like to do when she’s not singing? Who are her musical influences? And which Eurovision singers have been giving her support and advice to prepare for Warsaw 2020? Read on and find out!

Hello Chanel! Thank you for taking the time to chat with Eurovision Ireland! How does it feel to be representing Malta at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2020?

Hello! You’re welcome! I’m excited to be part of such a big contest and looking forward to giving a good performance!!

That’s awesome! Can you tell us a bit more about your song for Junior Eurovision, Chasing Sunsets?

First of all, it is a special song for me because it is my first original song. Chasing Sunsets talks about chasing our dreams, following them through even if these seem far and impossible at times. Like the birds flying freely we should be free to take any experiences coming our way.

That’s a very positive message! What was it like working with the team behind the song, like the composers and writers?

It’s an amazing experience and it makes it even more special as one of the composers is my cousin Aleandro, there is Peter and Joe from my cousin’s band and Emil who wrote the lyrics – they are all Super! And I am happy to have made new friends. Working with Claire McCartin, my vocal coach is great (and hard!) as she always has something to fix to make me a better singer! My friend Erika puts everything together, as my parents say!

Sounds like you have a great team behind you! Who would you say are your musical influences?

Oh, I have many musical influences! Singers like Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson, Rihanna and Ariana Grande have all really inspired me!

Definitely some very talented performers! If you could sing a duet with any singer both in Malta and around the world, who would it be and why?

Locally with Michela Pace (ESC Maltese participant 2019) because I love her voice!! As for an international singer, it would have to be Lady Gaga – because she is simply the best, I adore her!

Both excellent choices! Speaking of other singers, have you had any advice from former JESC or former Eurovision contestants?

Yes, from the one and only Destiny! Winner of JESC 2015, she always encourages me to do more (at the moment missing her big hugs 😀 ); and of course, from Michela Pace. We have been friends since we went to Lithuania together, where we participated in an international singing competition and we both came first in our age categories. It was an amazing experience!

Very sound advice! Aside from singing, what do you like to do? Do you have any hobbies?

I love to dance, used to do ballet and jazz, and lately been doing hip hop. I play the piano and would love to learn how to play the violin. I also would like to start drama lessons! Another hobby of mine is writing short stories.

What would it mean to you if you brought Malta their 3rd victory at Junior Eurovision?

It would mean a llllllooooottttt!!! No words to describe it!! I would be over the moon with joy, for sure I would be crying and my parents and grandparents would be crying more than me! It’s one of my dreams!

Lastly, do you have a message for your fans in Ireland and around the world?

Yes!!

Thank you Chanel! We here at Eurovision Ireland wish you all the very best of luck at Junior Eurovision! Awguri!

What do you think? Do you like Chasing Sunsets? Could Chanel bring Malta their 3rd Junior Eurovision trophy?

Let us know what you think!
