Romania once had one of the best qualification rates of any country at the Eurovision Song Contest. But 2019 marks the second year the country has failed to progress to Saturday’s final. Fans were understandably disappointed and everyone has their own theories as to what went wrong or why Romania failed to qualify. But the question we here at Eurovision Ireland are asking is this – is it time for Romania to forget about their national selection?
Since 2002, Selecția Națională has given Romania 8 songs that have finished in the Top 5 in semi-finals and 6 songs that have gone on to finish in the Top 10 at the final. So a national selection format has worked consistently for Romania for many years, as it does for many countries, including Sweden. So why has this format suddenly soured in Romania?
Some argued 2018’s epic 60 song selection was too long winded and fans mobilised to stop a particular entry winning, rather than voting for their favourites. This year, the selection was shorter but the public’s voting power was reduced to 1/7 by juries in a show that was plagued by controversies and saw two hot favourites fail to make an impact. Strangely, international juries both at Selecția Națională and Eurovision looked favourably on Ester Peony’s ‘On A Sunday’, but the voting public didn’t respond as well. With the public not getting behind their entries, is it time for TVR to consider an internal selection instead?
Internal selections can work – you only have to look at the Netherlands this year! Russia has opted for internal selections every year since 2013 and has finished in Top 3 in the last 3 finals they’ve been in. So for some countries, internal seems to be the way forward. At the other end of the scale, the United Kingdom opted for internal selections annually between 2011 and 2015 – and ended up in 11th, 25th, 19th, 17th and 24th… though we all know there’s a lot more going on there than just song choices!
We’re not singling out Romania to be critical – we here at Eurovision Ireland know many of our readers are Romanian and we really want Romania back at the final – so how do we all make this happen?!
Should Romania forget about Selecția Națională? Is it time for TVR to make an internal selection for 2020? We’ve come up with some ideas, so vote in our poll!
What do you think? Do you have a different idea about how you’d like Romania to come back fighting for Eurovision?
