BIRTHDAY: Christine Gulbrandsen from Norway is 34 today
What do you think of the free language rule? Is it a good thing, in that it allows people all over Europe to understand what you’re trying to say? Or does it kill national identity?
Many of our Nordic neighbours prefer using English these days, so it’s nice when they don’t. In 2006, today’s birthday girl Christine Gulbrandsen took a song in Norwegian through the Melodi Grand Prix and beat seven songs in English in the final. That’s an achievement in itself. She made it to the Grand Final in Athens, which was another achievement. And in a field of mostly English songs, only two entirely non-English ones finished above her. Maybe not was she was expecting, but still a sign that some voters out there like a song that’s not in English.
