Eurovision 2016

Tonight, Romania’s TVR have announced details of their National Selection Event for Eurovision 2016. And ladies and gentlemen, we’re off to Baia Mare!
In a change to previous years, this edition of Selecţia Naţionala will comprise of 2 shows – a semifinal on March 4th, followed by a final on March 6th both of which will be hosted at the Sala Polivalentă in Baia Mare.

It might seem odd that Selecţia Naţionala is being held in the 17th largest city in Romania as it is somewhere all but unknown to foreigners – the decision has surprised a lot of Romanians too! This may have had something to do with the fact that the mayor of Baia Mare, Catalin Cherecheş, recently posted on Facebook stating that the town would be willing to cover at least part of the costs of hosting the event as a means of promoting the city and its culture to tourists. And they’re not stopping there – it’s already been suggested that should Romania claim their first Eurovision victory, then the 2017 edition of the contest should also be hosted in Baia Mare! Talk about reaching for the stars!

Despite claims that TVR are in financial hardships, the Romanian broadcaster still affirmed that it is making

“special efforts to participate in the most important of European music contests.”

What do you think of this decision? Who are you most looking forward to seeing at Selecţia Naţionala? Do you think Romania has what it takes to bring home their first Eurovision victory?
