April 3rd marks a special day in the Eurovision Calendar as it was this day 43 years ago that RTE (Irish National Broadcaster) hosted their first Eurovision Song Contest.
Yes April 3rd 1971 and Dublin played host to the Eurovision Song Contest for the very first time. This followed the victory on Dana and her song “All Kinds Of Everything” in The Netherlands the previous year.

This was also one of the first major colour broadcasts made by RTE. Colour broadcasting first appeared in 1968 at RTE but it would take almost 5 years before colour transmission were a regular feature on Irish television – so the 1971 Eurovision Song Contest was a Broadcasting Event for RTE.
The Eurovision Song Contest was presented by the stunning Bernadette Ní Ghallchóir and came from Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre.
Angela Farrell represented Ireland that year with the song ‘One Day Love’ and placed 11th. The Contest that year was won by Monaco – their one and only time winning the contest. The singer was Séverine and the song was the Eurovision Classic “Un Banc, Un Arbre, Une Rue”.
More Eurovision memories coming your way.

Severine – for me, one of THE best ESC winners ever and surely one of the most passionate performances seen on a Eurovision stage! A timeless entry – it would be there or thereabouts most years…
I’m a sucker for French language ballads :)
