#STORYOFMYLIFE – Day Four with John from EI
In this series, we’ll be talking to someone and asking them to pick five songs (over five days) that mean something to them. These may not be their top five songs of all time – merely songs that attach to a specific memory or time in their life.
John from Eurovision Ireland opens this series. What’s his fourth and penultimate choice, and what’s the story behind it?
Life looks better in spring – Jon Lilygreen & The Islanders
This choice is a fun one. Oslo beckoned in 2010. After a number of years with accreditation I’d got the hang of what to expect, so it was only the dizzyingly expensive capital of Norway to really worry about. The act representing Cyprus was only one-sixth Cypriot, with the rest being either UK or Norwegian nationals. I and some pals got to know Jon Lilygreen and the Islanders at the opening party in Oslo’s City Hall. Jon’s girlfriend had turned down a fortnight in Oslo to go to the Med with her mates. So Jon’s pal Scott tagging along instead. He was not the tallest of gents, so him stood next to Eva from Armenia was a joy to behold.
Anyway, during the fortnight the Greeks and Cypriots had a joint party at a hotel in Oslo. Some of the ‘Cypriots’ decided to take a break on a balcony area outside, so I and some friends joined them. Among the stories shared was what Jon was doing when he got the call that he’d made the Cypriot national final. You had to be there. It was one of those impromptu moments that make a contest. So because of that fun evening, this is today’s choice.
If you have five songs that really mean something to you, drop us a line with them and the stories behind them, and you could feature soon.
