Power to the people indeed!! Ok, that was Molly from the UK in 2014, but it’s a fitting anthem for Malta too! For 2017, the Maltese public will choose their Eurovision entrant – without the help of a jury!!
In a recent interview, CEO of Malta’s PBS John Bundy stated that Malta’s singer for the 2017 contest in Kyiv will be chosen entirely by public vote and without the help of a jury . This will make it the first time in over a decade that the Maltese people have had the final say on who to send to Eurovision.
This could work well for Malta, or fall flat on its face. In 2005, the Maltese public chose Chiara to go to Kyiv, where she came 2nd with “Angel”. The following year however, Fabrizio Faniello’s “I Do” came last in Athens… and has the uneviable title of being Malta’s lowest scoring Eurovision entry, getting only a single point.
What do you think? Do the people of Malta have what it takes to chose a Eurovision winner? Will 2017 Malta’s year at long last?
