SWEDEN : Our Tips For Who To Keep A Close Eye On At Melodifestivalen 2016

Melodifestivalen 2016

Melodifestivalen 2016

Love it or loath it (WE LOVE IT) there is no escaping Melodifestivalen aka The Eurovision Smorgasbord of Swedish Music.

Today SVT announced the line up of singers and composers who are biding to represent Sweden at Eurovision on home soil in Stockholm 2016.

We take a close look at those in the running and pick out some acts that you should keep a close eye on in the contest when they release the songs.

Heat 1: Gothenburg 6/2 2016

• Mimi Werner – Is not No Good
Songwriter: Mimi Werner, Göran Werner, Marcus Svedin, Jason Saenz

• Samir & Viktor – both naked
Songwriter: Frederick Kempe, David Kreuger, Wrethov

• Robin Bengtsson – Constellation Price

• Ace Wilder – Do not Worry

• Pernilla Andersson – My gold
Songwriter: Pernilla Andersson, Fredrik Rönnqvist

• Albin & Mattias Andréasson – Rich
Songwriter: Albin Johnsen, Mattias Andreasson

Thoughts and Observations – Ok without even hearing a single note of the songs we are already interested in Ace Wilder’s entry. Missing out on representing Sweden at Eurovision in 2014 by the narrowest of margins, she is back. She did the right thing and took a year out and didn’t come straight back in 2015. Also worth noting is that she has the same writing team as she did in 2014 with ‘Busy Doing Nothing’. This could be the one to watch and being in Heat 1, it will be known to people for the longest time possible before the Melodifestivalen Final – should she qualify.

Samir and Viktor are back. Let’s hope that their vocals have improved over the last 12 months. However they have a secret weapon on their side – Frederick Kempe – who knows a thing or two about composing a good Melodifestivalen song! With a song called ‘Both Naked’ expect this to be flesh fest PR dream! No tan line guys!

Heat 2: Malmo 13/2 2016

• Victor and Night – 100%
Songwriter: Day Lundberg, Melker, Jesper Lundh

• Krista Siegfrids – Fall
Songwriter: Krista Siegfrids, Gabriel Alares, Magnus Wallin, Gustaf Svenungsson

• Molly Pettersson Hammar – Hunger
Songwriter: Joy Deb, Linnea Deb, Lisa Desmond, Anton Hard af Segerstad Molly Pettersson Hammar

• Patrik Isaksson, Tommy Nilsson and Marty Robbins – Hold my heart hard
Songwriter: Patrik Isaksson, Tommy Nilsson, Marty Robbins

• Isa – I Will Wait
Songwriter: Anton Hard af Segerstad Joy Deb, Deb Linnea, Nikki Flores

• Wiktoria – Save Me
Songwriter Jens Siverstedt, Lauren Dyson, Jonas Wallin

• David Lindgren – We Are Your Tomorrow
Songwriter: Wrethov, Sharon Vaughn, Gustav Efraimsson

Thoughts and Observations – Now where to begin. Krista Siegfrids got engaged in Finland and now looks like she is planning the honeymoon in Sweden. Yes the Finnish representative from Eurovision 2013 is back and now trying her luck in Sweden. Not as weird as it sounds as the Scandi singers are well received in each others national selections. Will her proposal be accepted? There should be a lot if interest in this one.

Melodifestivalen always like to remind us of entrants from over the years and this heat brings you Tommy Nilsson. He came 4th for Sweden at Eurovision 1989 with the classic song ‘En Dag’. Expect the televote to be open to liking this song if it plays to the strengths of Nilsson, Isaksson and Robbins.

Also back for a third time is David Lindgren. He made the Melodifestivalen finals before with ‘Shout It Out’ and ‘Skyline’. Third time lucky for him? Well he will be closing this heat so that could be a good omen for him as SVT like to close their shows with big songs.

Heat 3: Norrköping 20/2 2016

• Oscar Zia – Human
Songwriter: Oscar Zia, Victor Thell, Mary Smith

• Saraha – Kizunguzungu
Songwriter: Wrethov, Sara “Saraha” Larsson, Arash

• After Dark – Come out as a star
Songwriter: Sven-Inge Sjöberg, Lennart Wastesson, Larry Forsberg, Lina Eriksson, Kent Olsson, Calle Kindbom

• Lisa Ajax – My Heart Wants Me Dead
Songwriter: Linnea Deb, Joy Deb, Anton Hard af Segerstad

• Boris René – Put Your Love On Me
Songwriter: Boris René, Tobias Lundgren, Tim Larsson

• Smilo – Weight of the World
Songwriter: Arvid Angstrom, Dennis Babic, Oscar Berglund Juhola, Anton Göransson, Robin Danielsson

• Swingfly feat. Helena Gutarra – You Carved Your Name
Songwriter: Jocke Åhlund, Kleerup

Thoughts and Observations – For me the one to look out for is Swingfly feat. Helena Gutarra. Swingfly will be familiar to you from Melodifestivalen 2011 – ‘Me and My Drum’. However even more interesting is the composer – Kleerup! He is the Swedish producer responsible for many huge international hits including Robyn’s #1 smash ‘With Every Heartbeat’ along with other songs for Eurovision winner Loreen. So this is one to keep a watchful eye on!

Oscar Zia came to Melodifestivalen 2014 and ‘Yes We Can’ return from the looks of it. As the show opener this could be a showstopper and the guy is a triple threat – He can sing, he can dance and he is easy on the eye. So one to watch.

Heat 4: Gavle 2.27 2016

• Martin Stenmarck – You take me back
Songwriter: David Stenmarck

• Panetoz – Hold me tight
Songwriter: Jimmy Jansson, Karl-Ola Kjell Holm, Jacket Erixson, Pa Modou Badjie, Njol Badjie, Nebeyu Baheru

• Frans – If I Were Sorry
Songwriter: Oscar Fogelström, Michael Saxell, Fredrik Andersson, Frans Jeppsson Wall

• Linda Bengtzing – Killer Girl
Songwriter: Mattias Donald Berger, Andreas Berlin, Linda Bengtzing, Day Öhrlund

• dolly style – Rollercoaster
Songwriters: Thomas G: son, Peter Boström, Alexandra Salomonsson

• Eclipse – Runaways
Songwriter: Erik Mårtensson

• Molly Sanden – YOUniverse
Songwriter: Molly Sanden, Danny Saucedo, John Alexis

Thoughts and Observations – Sweden proves to us that they are a recycling kingdom with this heat. They have brought back many familiar names and reunited bands just to give you a show. Where to start!

Martin Stenmarck is back. He represented Sweden at Eurovision in 2005 with ‘Las Vegas’. The cards didn’t go his way and he finished a disappointing 19th. He returned to Melodifestivalen recently and that went well. So we see him again in 2016.

Dolly Style – well what can we say besides ‘Hello Hi’. They seemingly disbanded after Melodifestivalen 2015 but they are back! Look who they have composing their song – Thomas G: son whom composed Loreen’s Eurovision winning ‘Euphoria’ along with countless other Eurovision and national selection songs – including Cyprus’ entry for 2016 with the band Minus One. Expect some good Bubble Gum Pop.

Linda Bengtzing – All you have to say is Linda Bengtzing. It wouldn’t be Melodifestivalen without her! Also back are Panetoz who impressed us in 2014 with their Dance Hall song ‘Efter Solsken’. Let’s hope they bring us some of this again.

Molly Sanden – I think this could be one to watch. She is the darling of Swedish Music and is very popular in Sweden for her music and her engaging personality especially following her intimate song ‘Freak’ from last year that told her own story of being bullied as a child. She has teamed up with Melodifestivalen heart-throb Danny Saucedo to write the song ‘YOUniverse’. This is the last song in the heats and could be one to watch. Expect the PR machine to be in overdrive for this song.

So there you have it. Let the speculation begin. As we await for the songs to be released closer to the actual live shows I would say that based on past performances and the writing teams involved that some of the contenders to look forward to would be Ace Wilder, Molly Sanden, Swingfly, Tommy Nilsson (and team) and Oscar Zia.

So who from today’s announced Acts has grabbed your attention? Has SVT got a good balance of Old and New acts? Are you as surprised as we are that both Frederick Kempe and Thomas G:Son only have one song each in the contest?

Have your say and let us know.

  1. Has to be Molly Sanden’s year but there are a few to watch like Ace Wilder and Lisa Ajax too, the most recent Swedish Idol winner!
