LIVE BLOG

I don’t want to be as pretty as Heidi Klum, or be as well dressed as Karl Lagerfeld or “Looking For Freedom” like David Hasselhoff was in 1989 – I want a great German Eurovision Winner tonight and with less than 10 minutes to go I hope I get one!

I can’t make up my mind if this pre show music is either A – Elevator Music, B – Department Store Music or C – 1970’s Adult Movie Music?

What do you think?

HERE WE GO!!!

It’s Emmelie de Forest

Will someone buy her a pair of shoes! She must have made some money from Eurovision? Will the good people at Clark’s Shoes sponsor her a nice sensible pair of court shoes!

Hobbit Feet

I am bringing a pair of shoes to Copenhagen!

Barbara – your presenter – a few German Jokes. The rules – oh the Germans like their rules! Angela has shown us that!

1. Das Gezeichnete Ich – Weil Du Da Bist // Echo

First off – well done NDR for the cracking stage. It is #FABULOUS

Now for Das Gezeichnete. It looked like he was singing with the shining light from the movie The Poltergeist. You remember what happened with things that came into contact with that – they disappeared. Unfortunately that is what happened with his pitch and melody. This looked good but sounded very poor. Hey I am not getting down – “Things Can Only Get Better”

2. Oceana – Thank You // All Night

“Hey Girl” – It’s Foxy Cleopatra Comin’ At Ya. A bit of German funk coming your way. All that was missing was the pole for Oceana to dance from! Thigh high silver boots – I have the exact pair on me now – but I wear them so much better! This was a song that promised to be a fast German BMW but I felt that I was driving a Lada instead. Promised but never delivered!

3. Santiano – The Fiddler On The Deck // Wir Werden Niemals Untergehen

Lock up your wives and daughters as the German Pirates are coming and they have brought their own ship too! Looking like all of our Father’s at a wedding party after they have had a good few beers! But that is the best part of a wedding and by far the best part of the show by far! This is the typical Oktoberfest Beer Schlager song that we have all danced too while downing a Stein or 10 of good quality German beer. This has to make the second round!

4. MarieMarie – Cotton Candy Hurricane // Candy Jar

Just what a national selection needs is an Afro/Mohican harp playing singer! I kid you not. I take my lederhosen  off to her for playing a giant harp while singing and hitting her camera angles. Oh did I mention that to complete the ensemble she has a plastic pleated skirt on too. It was all like I was on a sugar rush from all that “Cotton Candy”. It is the end of the song and I can’t really remember the song. That is not a good sign.

5. The Baseballs – Mo Hotta Mo Betta // Goodbye Peggy Sue

Those Santiano pirates better watch out as The Baseball Rockers have brought fire onto the stage and the walls make the “Land of Fire” look like a camp fire! The guys were smokin’ HOT from their Elvis Hip Shakes to their faultless vocals. They have tried for Eurovision before but this time those “Hips don’t lie” – they actually had me in a daze. I am not sure if it was the burning piano or the tight jeans on the guys but I was rather hot after that performance. A sure fire bet for the Top 4

6. Elaiza – Is It Right // Fight Against Myself

I am a sucker for an accordion and this had one! A thumping Schlager meets Hip Hop song – let’s call it SchlagerHop. Loved the song! A thumping bass line beat that had me hooked from the first beat. Vocally spot on and the first song that had no gimmicks and had a modern feel to it. The competition just got interesting! I feel like I am in a BMW, doing 200 MPH down the Autobahn with tasty schnitzel! Top 4 for sure!

7. Unheilig – Als Wär’s Das Erste Mal // Wir Sind Alle Wie Eins

Another good performance from Unheilig. You would not expect anything less from this Goth/Rock band. This song is a watered down hard-core Goth/Rock would be. I call this “Gock for the suburbs”. It was good but safe. I felt like I had just gotten into a good Swedish Volvo – it was safe, reliable and comfortable. I enjoyed it and it could be our winner. I wanted them to let it rip – no NOT R.I.P. – let it rip and give me some musical nightmares. Instead they gently rocked into a comfortable state of bliss. Guaranteed Top 4

8. Madeline Juno – Like Lovers Do // Error

Cooky. That is they word that keep coming to me after her performance. Cooky, Cooky, Cooky like a  cuckoo clock. Flanked with an army of drummers that would make Emmelie de Forest jealous. Liked the tone of Madeline’s voice but the song might not be as memorable as others before. The audience seemed to like it.

INTERVAL ACT

Speaking of Emmelie de Forest’s drummers guess who is back and still barefoot it is our reigning Eurovision Winner with her Eurovision 2014 Theme song “Rainmaker”.

Recap of the songs

My Predictions for the 4 Second Round Songs

  • Santiano
  • The Baseballs
  • Elaiza
  • Unheilig

I think The Baseballs could have a fight on their hands with MarieMarie

Who do you think will get through to Round Two?

Time for some Green Room Fun!

Round Two Qualifiers

Hey I am not as bad at this Eurovision Prediction lark – well here in Germany anyways! The 4 qualifiers for Round Two are

  • Santiano
  • MarieMarie
  • Elaiza
  • Unheilig

Now we will hear the second song from the 4 artists.

ROUND TWO

Santiano – Song 2 Wir Werden Niemals Untergehen

The guys are getting value for money from their Pirates of the Caribbean ship. It is back again for a second time. This song is still your typical German Schlager Song though more somber but highly infectious. Am I turning into a German beer drinking and schlager music lover? I think I am! I enjoyed this or is that the Beer Goggles talking!

MarieMarie – Song 2 Candy Jar

This is a far better song for MarieMarie and I am so happy that we got to hear this one. It is a funky electronic pop song. Do you remember Blitzkids from the German final last year? Well this is in that same style. Oh I want to taste more of the goodies from this “Candy Jar”. This would give Eurovision a Sugar Rush but remember to brush your teeth kids!

Elaiza – Song 2 Fight Against Myself

Oh the accordion is back and is tag teamed with that other underrated instrument the Tuba! This is another catchy “SchlagerHop” song. I going to put a copyright on that phrase. Again this is an instantly memorable song that would charm an Eurovision audience and Jury for sure. Don’t fight against yourself Elaiza – fight against your opponents for that ticket to Copenhagen!

Unheilig – Song 2 – Wir Sind Alle Wie Eins

This is more like the Unheilig that I wanted. A far superior song than their first effort. More anthemic – like I am being led into the gates of Hell – which I wanted from them. The master of ceremonies preached from his altar and the crowd responded. He was just teasing me the first time around! That for me is your winner!

Time to recap the songs and telephone numbers.

My Predictions For The Super Final

  • Elaiza
  • Unheilig

INTERVAL ACT

We have 3 guests – Jon Ola Sand (EBU), Christer Bjorkman (SVT) and Nicola Caliagore (RAI)

The Super-Final Top 2

Oh I got it right

  • Elaiza – And the song “Is It Right”
  • Unheilig – And the song “Wir Sind Alle Wie Eins”

Both songs are now reprised

Now Emma Marrone from Italy on stage

What do we make of Emma’s performance?

She gave that extra 10% that she always does live. The vocals suffered somewhat from all the jumping around but more importantly the song has not been remixed based on that performance.

WINNER

The winner was announced and Elaiza beats the famous Unheilig and will perform “Is it Right” in Copenhagen!

Great show from NDR and a great winner!

  1. Although I like the winner I am not sure it will engage the euro voters. Think Unheilig would have fared better but not won.
