Björn Ulvaeus of Abba apologizes for his comments on The Boston Marathon

ABBA star Björn Ulvaeus has apologised for making his ill thought comment about the Boston Marathon blasts on the BBC One Breakfast television show last Tuesday.

Controversy surrounded his comment that he made when asked how he managed to look so good for his age to which he replied

“Well, I don’t know, running is good – unless you’re in the Boston Marathon,” he said, before quickly adding “Which is terrible”.

Ulvaeus apologised for the poor taste comment saying

“This morning on BBC Breakfast I let my tongue slip with terrible results. I feel very, very bad about it, I am truly sorry and I hope that everybody understands that it was an unbelievably stupid slip of the tongue. As everyone else I feel sorrow about what’s happened and deep compassion with the victims of this atrocity.”

Outraged viewers took to Twitter after the breakfast show aired with some saying

“Björn Ulvaeus, how can you be that stupid and pull a joke about something so terrible? I am cleaning my lists from #Abba songs.” — Daniel Wertheim (@danielwertheim)

“Too soon Björn Ulvaeus, too soon for jokes about Boston Marathon blast “— Robert Wange (@RobertWange)

  1. It was clearly not meant as a sick joke. He just realised that ‘running is good for you’ might sound insensitive on such a day, tried to correct himself and unfortunately made matters worse. Don’t forget he’s not a native English speaker. I actually feel very sorry for him – anyone can make a mistake, and to do that on live TV must have made him feel dreadful.

People are sometimes too quick to condemn.

  2. People are far too sensitive!! And the likelihood of anyone who was ACTUALLY affected by this atrocity seeing BBC Breakfast is very slim.

    • It was a badly timed joke that he himself sees – hence his apology. We were shocked at such a media and politically savi person like him making a faux pas like this. But his apology sets the record straight.
