#STORYOFMYLIFE – Day Five with John from EI
In this series, we’ll be talking to someone and asking them to pick five songs (over five days) that mean something to them. These may not be their top five songs of all time – merely songs that attach to a specific memory or time in their life.
John from Eurovision Ireland opens this series. What’s his final choice, and what’s the story behind it?
What’s another year – Johnny Logan
I’ve been a fan of the contest for way too long. And for those of a certain age, you may remember that the BBC used to broadcast two preview programmes, showcasing the songs in that year’s contest. Those two Sunday afternoons before the contest were just brilliant, as it would be the first time you’d see the songs.
In 1980, I was looking forward to The Hague’s contest, and settled down to watch the previews, much to my family’s bemusement. With only one TV in the house, my family weren’t really interested, and wanted to go to a garden centre instead. I dug in and in that second preview programme, this song came on. It absolutely knocked my sideways and knew this was the one. Sure enough, it went on to win in The Hague, and I reached my peak as a tipster at the age of eight. Here’s to Johnny Logan.
That’s John’s final choice. Come back on Monday for the start of another five memorable songs. If you have five songs that really mean something to you, drop us a line with them and the stories behind them, and you could feature soon.
