Have you ever know what friends are for? Yes, we’ve picked an actual song lyric to open today’s birthday homage. We all need friends, but in some quarters friendships are getting a little strained of late.

Our favourite TV show was envisaged as a device to bring Europe (and beyond) together. On the whole it has, but some countries sit on the sidelines. One of those is Romania, and in 2003 they sent today’s birthday girl Nicoleta “Nicola” Alexandru to Rīga. It was the last one-night-only cavalcade, and Nicola got a decent draw towards the end. She finished tenth, maybe partly due to her giant records. If you don’t remember records, ask an adult to fill you in. They made an impression and gave her one maximum and one set of 10-points.
