#BIRTHDAY: Vaiko Eplik from Estonia is 44 today
You can always spot when a country is gearing up for a win. It’s happened often when they get in their groove for a few years, and then win that crystal microphone. But what happens after that?
Some countries keep that momentum going and continually do well. But others, well, seem to lose their way a little. Our friends in Estonia won in 2001, and it had been on the cards for a few years. But then… but then the wheels seemed to come off. In 2003 they sent Ruffus, fronted by today’s birthday boy Vaiko Eplik. He was – potentially – years ahead of his time with the song he wrote. In the 2020s, it may have done well, but in 2003 could only manage 21st. It signalled some years in the doldrums for the Estonian broadcaster. Vaiko these days is more an author than a singer, and has made his name as chairman of Estonia’s authors society. Who says the contest kills careers?
