
The Eurovision Ireland Team have very sadly heard today of the death of a long -standing much loved UK Eurovision Winner. Martin Lee , main lead vocalist and also guitarist of the Brotherhood of Man from the United Kingdom passed away on Sunday 29th September 2024 at the age of 77. The sad news was posted on the group’s Facebook page this morning.
Martin Lee was brought into Brotherhood of Man along with Lee Sheridan, Sandra Stevens and Nicky Stevens in 1972 , after it’s original line -up from the late 60’s had split up . Following their first European number one hit with a song called “Kiss Me , Kiss your Baby ” , they then went on to represent the UK in the 1976 Eurovision Song Contest in the Hague scoring one of the most memorable victories in the contest’s history with the song “Save Your Kisses for me”, which even today is still fondly remembered and included in Eurovision history films and played at Eurovision events . Following their victory in the Hague , “Save your Kisses for me ” topped the UK singles charts and was also number one in more than 30 other countries . Brotherhood of Man went on to have the UK chart hits “Figaro”, “Angelo” in the years after the 1976 competition . They continued to tour all over Europe , only finally retiring from the road in 2020.
The remaining group members made the following statement on announcing Martin’s death
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our great friend and Colleague, Brotherhood of Man’s Martin Lee, who slipped peacefully away on the evening of Sunday , September 29th , 2024 , from heart failure after a short illness. Martin was 77.Over the past 50 years ,the four of us have toured the world together in harmony and have so many happy memories , but now we are in total shock and cannot imagine a world without Martin Lee”.
Martin was also married for 45 years to his Brotherhood of Man colleague Sandra Stevens and is survived by her and his daughter from a previous marriage.
We at Eurovision Ireland would like to send our sincere condolences to Sandra , Martin’s family and the remaining Brotherhood of Man members. Rest in Peace Martin Lee.
